Clinical Laboratory Scientist - Part-Time

The Sepsis RN Coordinator is responsible for the strategic development, implementation, and ongoing management of protocols, procedures, and performance improvement initiatives related to sepsis. This role ensures early identification, appropriate treatment, accurate documentation, and improved outcomes for patients with actual or suspected sepsis across the Emergency Department, inpatient units, and ICU.

Serving as a clinical leader, educator, liaison, and data analyst, the coordinator plays a key role in aligning care practices with Joint Commission certification standards, California Title 22, CMS Core Measures, and hospital goals. Actively and consistently contributes to department operations and communications, behaves in a manner consistent with the mission, vision, and values of Pipeline Health, upholding standards of AIDET (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank you) patient communication.

Essential Functions:

• Leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of evidence-based sepsis care, along with workflows, protocols, policies, and procedures across Emergency Department and inpatient departments.
• Coordinates interdepartmental communication and planning to support compliance with Sepsis Metrics (SEP-1, Mortality, Sepsis LOS, Sepsis readmission rates and bundle compliance)
• Provides education and training to staffincluding nurses, physicians, and support personnelon sepsis recognition, early intervention, treatment protocols, and documentation standards.
• Implements and monitor screening tools and procedures to identify patients at risk for sepsis, facilitating early detection and timely care.
• Collects, analyzes, and reports sepsis-related data to identify trends, monitor outcomes, and support performance improvement initiatives.
• Collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to integrate sepsis protocols into patient care pathways and ensure seamless coordination across departments.
• Maintains current knowledge of Joint Commission, CDPH, CMS and California Title 22 standards related to sepsis care.
• Oversees compliance tracking and reporting for sepsis protocols, including submission of data to regulatory bodies and internal leadership.
• Participates in quality improvement initiatives aimed at reducing sepsis-related morbidity and mortality.
• Promotes community education and awareness about sepsis through outreach programs, workshops, and seminars.
• Uses clear, concise, and professional communication with coworkers, patients, and internal/external customers.
• Applies AIDET principles in patient and family interactions and utilizes whiteboards for effective communication.
• Collaborates across disciplines to assist in coordination of patient care, including transfers, discharges, referrals, and addressing psychosocial/spiritual needs.
• Acts with a sense of urgency and accountability in all tasks.
• Maintains organized and clutter-free workspaces, including files, drawers, and cabinets.
• Reports equipment and environmental issues promptly for repair.
• Adheres to HIPAA regulations and maintains patient confidentiality.
• Utilizes SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation) for effective communication during handoffs and interdisciplinary interactions.
• Speaks up to escalate potential safety concerns and participates in safety initiatives.
• Completes and attends monthly training and education assignments.
• May float to other hospital areas as needed.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications/Experience:

• Three (3) years' experience as a nurse in an acute care setting.
• Critical thinking, service excellence and good interpersonal communication skills, ability to read/comprehend written instructions, strong organizational skills, ability to follow verbal instructions, and PC (computer) skills.
• A capacity to learn, synthesize, make critical judgments, work independently, place patients and families first, and collaborate with the team members who are recognized leaders within health care.

Education

Bachelor of Science in Nursing or better in Nursing.
