Overview Person County Government is actively recruiting full-time Paramedics to join its Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division—a team dedicated to providing high-quality, lifesaving care to the community. Job Summary Paramedics perform advanced and basic life support assessment, treatment, stabilization, and transport of patients in emergency and non‑emergency situations. This position requires strong clinical judgment, technical proficiency, and the ability to remain calm and decisive in fast‑paced, high‑pressure environments. Paramedics play a critical role in patient care, working collaboratively with fellow EMS personnel, fire departments, law enforcement, hospitals, and other healthcare providers. Essential Functions Respond to emergency calls in an ambulance and perform necessary rescue work in accordance with established protocols for Basic and Advanced Life Support; administer emergency medical care, including transport ventilators, intravenous infusion pumps, suction units, immobilization equipment, syringes and medications, cardiac monitors/defibrillators, video laryngoscopes, and automatic chest compression devices. Perform emergency medical acts in accordance with protocols established by the department and the County’s Medical Director; administer cardiac and narcotic medications via intravenous line, perform pulmonary ventilations, and obtain EKGs for cardiac diagnostics. Perform patient assessment and basic life support techniques in accordance with local protocols—including airway management, CPR, oxygen administration, hemorrhage control, treatment for shock, bandaging, dressing injuries, splinting of fractures and dislocations, treatment of injuries to various parts of the body, provision of basic life support for medical injuries, assisting in normal and abnormal childbirth, and treatment of burns; lift and move patients for transfer to a medical facility, and extricate patients from confined areas. Transport patients to local and regional medical facilities, maintain contact with medical staff while in transport, and assure continuous patient care. Complete full patient care documentation through various paper and electronic formats during and after calls for service, including information for billing documentation and legal accountability. Participate in a continuous training program to maintain certification and improve competence in medical technical work and operations; study street and road patterns and networks of the County to make future runs with minimum difficulty and delay. Inspect and test response vehicles and their emergency equipment, maintain proper inventory of equipment and supplies, clean and sanitize equipment daily, and ensure vehicles are in good working order; make routine adjustments and report any non‑minor defects for specialized attention. Maintain cleanliness and perform minor maintenance of EMS facilities—sweeping, mopping, cleaning dishes, cleaning and sanitizing living spaces, and cleaning up around the outside of the facility. Participate in community outreach programs to promote safety, prevention awareness, and to provide information on EMS services. Serve as a Field Training Officer for newer employees, overseeing and documenting protocols; provide direction to EMT, AEMT, and First Responder certified staff or employees of other organizations. Work in the County’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) or Mobile EOC and conduct other emergency support function (ESF) duties as required. Perform related work as assigned. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements High School Graduation or GED equivalent. Special Certifications and Licenses Certification by the State of North Carolina as an EMT‑Paramedic or be eligible for state reciprocity/legal recognition by the State of North Carolina. CPR Certification. Complete NIMS/ICS 100, 200, 700, 800 within 90 days of hire date. Maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history. Pre‑Employment Screening Pre‑employment drug screen for all candidates. Safety Sensitive positions are also subject to random drug and alcohol testing. Background check for all candidates; some positions also require a credit check. Additional screening and testing may be required for some positions. Compensation and Schedule The starting salary will be determined with consideration given to both the candidate’s educational background and relevant work experience. Shift cycle: 24 hours on and 72 hours off. Built‑in overtime available. Benefits NC STATE RETIREMENT SYSTEM – Employee contributes 6% of pre‑tax salary; county contributes 14.39% for county employees and 16.08% for law enforcement effective 7/1/2024. EMPOWER 401K & 457 – County contributes 5% of salary into the 401k; employee can contribute up to 80% of compensation or up to $17,500. PAID LEAVE – Annual leave: 0‑2 years: 12 days, 3‑4 years: 15 days, 5‑9 years: 17 days, 10‑14 years: 20 days, 15‑19 years: 22 days, 20+ years: 25 days. Sick leave: 12 days per year. Holidays: 12 paid holidays per year. Parental leave: 30 paid days of new parent leave. Volunteer leave: Up to 24 hours of paid time off per fiscal year. Wellness day: 1 day per year. PAY PROGRAM – Merit increases: Annual increases based upon performance (up to 3%). LONGEVITY PAY – 1 year to TUITION REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM – Employees may be reimbursed up to $2,500 per fiscal year. CERTIFICATIONS – 1.5% salary increase per advanced certification pertaining to the job. DIRECT DEPOSIT – Employees are paid bi‑weekly with Direct Deposit. WELLNESS PROGRAMS – County Employee Gym: $25 membership fee per year for full‑time or $50 for part‑time public safety employees at the Sheriff’s Dept. or EMS whose position requires you to be "fit for duty". Walk or Work Out Program: physically active for 45 minutes three times a week. INSURANCE – Health Insurance – HSA – CIGNA – County contributes $1,200 to HSA account; employee pays $0 for self, $217.80 with one child, $283.14 with children, $806.95 with spouse, $1,062.86 for family. Health Insurance – Traditional Plan – CIGNA – Employee $54.45, 1 child $435.60, children $522.72, spouse $1,324.87, family $1,721.48. Dental Insurance – Employee $0 (county pays 100% premium), child $54.91, spouse $38.11, family $94.27. Vision – Employee $7.28, child $16.62, spouse $14.54, family $25.62. Life Insurance – $10,000 policy provided; supplemental policies $25,000 to $100,000 available.
