Basic Function

The job of Speech/Language Pathology Assistant is done for the purpose/s of providing appropriate speech therapy for students who have been identified with communication disorders to meet the individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and in collaboration with Speech and Language Pathologist; screening students for functional developmental levels in pre-language and language skills and oral motor control; and screening for possible communication challenges that would impact the student's learning.

This job reports to Assigned Administrator.

Representative Duties

Essential Functions

Attends meetings and workshops (e.g. training, team meetings, meetings with outside agencies, etc.) for the purpose of conveying and/or receiving information.

Consults and collaborates with Speech Language Pathologists, teachers, class assistants, families, etc. for the purpose of providing requested information, reviewing students' speech therapy goals/objectives, contributing to developing the therapy plan.

Implements therapeutic activities and instructs students, teachers, parents and other involved persons for the purpose of providing appropriate care to students and/or supporting the student's IEP plan.

Maintains files and/or records (e.g. progress reports, billings, activity logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities and/or ensuring an up-to-date trail for compliance.

Maintains therapy materials (e.g. toys, flashcards, books, board games, etc.) for the purpose of implementing therapy goals.

Performs site visits at multiple work sites including home visits for the purpose of providing therapy and assistance as required.

Prepares written materials (e.g. activity logs, progress notes, reports, memos, time studies, summer activities packets, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.

Presents information (e.g. student performance data, and clinical feedback, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.

Provides English translation when needed for the purpose of to ensure students and parents understand instructions.

Provides direct speech therapy services to students according to IEP goals for the purpose of ensuring compliance with established practices and procedures.

Provides training and instruction under the supervision of the SLP to teachers on the use of assistive devices (e.g. augmentative and alternative communication, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring such devices are used safely and optimal benefits are achieved.

Reports incidents and observations (e.g. suspected child abuse, suspected substance abuse, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining personal safety of students, providing a positive learning environment and adhering to Education Code, administrative and/or school policies.

Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, screening tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing students' functional goals.

Transports a variety of items (e.g. puzzles, games, assistive devices, assessment tools, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of materials required for therapy sessions.

Troubleshoots problems with assistive devices (e.g. AAC, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that equipment is in proper working order and/or providing alternative strategies.

Marginal Functions

Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

Initial/Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

1. High School Diploma (or GED equivalent).
2. A valid Speech and Language Pathology Assistant license (SLPA) issued by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology Board. Speech-Language Pathology Assistant Certificate from an agency authorized to issue a current, valid, and official certification. As part of the certification process the District may require registration as a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant with the State of California.
3. Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

1. Must maintain current Speech and Language Pathology registration throughout employment in this position.
2. Valid Class C Driver's license & availability of private transportation.
3. Valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification issued by the American Red Cross or any agency authorized by the American Red Cross.
4. Valid First Aid certification issued by the American Red Cross or any agency authorized by the American Red Cross.
5. Employees must maintain up-to-date certifications in CPR and First Aid during employment.
6. Some positions may require the ability to read, write, and speak Spanish fluently.
7. Some positions may require sign language skills.

PREFERENCES

Preference will be given to applicants with:

1. A BA in Speech Pathology or related field.
2. Six months school-based experience working with individuals with speech and language disabilities in a structured environment, which can include field work experience (paid or voluntary), which involves learning the job responsibilities and workplace behaviors of the speech-language pathology assistant.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Working Conditions

SKILLS are required to perform single, technical tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adhering to safety practices; applying assessment instruments; operating standard office equipment including pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions; and solve practical problems. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: student behavior management skills; adaptive equipment; and application of best-practices in subject area.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment.

Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: being attentive to detail; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; working as part of a team; displaying tact and courtesy; being empathetic and nonjudgemental; and establishing and maintaining effective relationships, especially with students.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some climbing and balancing, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 60% sitting, 30% walking, and 10% standing. The job is performed in a generally hazard free environment.
