Position Summary

We are seeking a compassionate, dependable, and motivated Veterinary Assistant to join our veterinary team. The Veterinary Assistant supports veterinarians and veterinary technicians by providing quality patient care, assisting with medical procedures, maintaining a clean and organized hospital, and delivering exceptional customer service to clients. The ideal candidate is passionate about animal health, works well in a fast-paced environment, and enjoys being part of a collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians with examinations, treatments, and surgical procedures.
• Safely restrain animals during examinations and medical procedures.
• Prepare exam rooms and treatment areas before and after patient visits.
• Clean, disinfect, and sterilize medical instruments and equipment.
• Feed, exercise, and monitor hospitalized animals.
• Collect laboratory samples, including urine and fecal specimens, as directed.
• Perform basic laboratory tasks and assist with diagnostic testing.
• Administer medications and treatments under the supervision of a veterinarian or licensed veterinary technician, as permitted by state regulations.
• Maintain accurate patient records and update medical charts.
• Stock supplies and ensure exam rooms are fully equipped.
• Assist with client education regarding preventive care, medications, nutrition, and post-treatment instructions.
• Answer phones, schedule appointments, and assist with client check-in and check-out when needed.
• Maintain a clean, safe, and organized hospital environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous experience in a veterinary clinic, animal hospital, kennel, shelter, or animal care setting preferred.
• Strong animal handling and restraint skills.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to multitask and remain calm under pressure.
• Willingness to work evenings, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
• Stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods.
• Safely handle animals of various sizes and temperaments.
• Work in an environment with exposure to animal dander, cleaning chemicals, and potential zoonotic diseases.

Preferred Qualifications

• Veterinary Assistant certification or completion of a veterinary assistant training program is a plus.
• Experience with electronic medical records.
• Knowledge of animal behavior, husbandry, and basic veterinary terminology.
