This role involves providing care to these patients through the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, and available resources within the institution’s philosophy. Essential functions include performing all responsibilities and duties required by the unit specific to the scope of service. The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice. Maintaining up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided is crucial for the integration of information for use by the healthcare team. Completing the initial assessment upon patient admission and developing an appropriate plan of care based on patient and family needs is expected. The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures. Continuous evaluation allows for modifications to the plan of care as needed. The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and correcting safety hazards and incidents. Effective communication with others directly and in private is necessary to resolve issues. Offering constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers is an important aspect of the role. The RN confers with colleagues to expand their knowledge base. Identifying personal learning needs and taking initiative to address them is expected. All requirements of departmental competencies must be fulfilled. Department-specific functions include receiving patient bedside shift reports from another RN at the beginning of each shift. This includes ensuring patient input, visual validation of a safe patient room environment, and updating the patient communication board in each room. Delegating patient care tasks to assigned health care techs and validating the completion of those tasks throughout the shift is required. Basic RN patient care activities include assessments, interpretation of vital signs, ensuring physician order completion, and managing patient admissions and discharges. Hourly rounding on each assigned patient, care plan documentation, and patient education must be completed. The RN will provide patient medications adhering to the five rights: Right Patient, Right Medication, Right Route, Right Dose, and Right Time. Maintaining patient safety as a top priority includes ensuring compliance with safety measures like fall precautions and pressure ulcer prevention. A positive attitude that promotes a healthy work environment and a healing patient environment is essential. Prompt answering of patient call lights is necessary to ensure effective triage and timely completion of patient requests and medical needs. Utilizing critical thinking, the RN evaluates the overall patient condition and uses nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient status. Effective communication within the healthcare team promotes interdisciplinary collaboration and effective patient care coordination. Efficient time management is vital to expedite the admission and discharge process for observation status patients and facilitate patient testing.
