Mortgage Underwriting Team Lead

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Underwriting Team Lead to oversee a team of mortgage underwriters within our growing independent mortgage banking operation. This role blends hands-on underwriting expertise with leadership, ensuring loans are reviewed accurately, efficiently, and in full compliance with investor and regulatory guidelines.

What You’ll Do

• Lead, coach, and develop a team of underwriters to meet quality and turnaround expectations
• Underwrite complex residential mortgage loans (Conventional, FHA, VA, USDA)
• Serve as an escalation point for exception scenarios and second-level reviews
• Manage pipeline distribution and ensure timely file movement
• Partner with processing, closing, and sales teams to resolve conditions and keep loans on track
• Monitor team performance metrics and drive continuous improvement
• Ensure compliance with agency guidelines and regulatory standards
• Support audits and contribute to underwriting policy enhancements

What We’re Looking For

• 5+ years of mortgage underwriting experience
• Prior leadership or mentoring experience preferred
• Strong knowledge of agency guidelines (Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, FHA, VA, USDA)
• Experience with Encompass loan origination system required
• DE, SAR, or LAPP certification
• Proven ability to manage a pipeline in a fast-paced environment
• Strong analytical skills and sound credit judgment
• Excellent communication and team leadership abilities
