Our Values: Customer Focus, One L&I, Respect, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, Learning and Growth, Reliability In addition to the base salary above Industrial Hygienists and Safety & Health Professionals will be compensated basic salary plus 10% for each hour they are required to use personal protective equipment (excluding hard hats, boots, hearing and eye protection) to enter a hazardous worksite to consult, inspect or investigate where serious hazards are present. PLUS If assigned to a duty station in King County, the incumbent will receive 5% premium pay in addition to the salary listed above.

Lead the Team That Responds When It Matters Most Are you an experienced Process Safety Management (PSM) professional ready to lead a team whose work protects thousands of Washington workers? L&I’s Division of Occupational Safety & Health (DOSH) is seeking an experienced Process Safety Management Supervisor to lead a team of expert Compliance Safety & Health Investigators overseeing inspections at some of Washington's most complex and high-hazard industrial facilities. In this leadership role, you'll play a vital part in protecting Washington's workforce by fostering safe and healthy workplaces through enforcement, consultation, education, incident investigations, and collaborative partnerships with employers and employees. You’ll have the opportunity to provide leadership during investigations involving catastrophic incidents, chemical releases, refinery operations, and highly hazardous chemical processes. Your expertise will help shape statewide enforcement efforts while mentoring the next generation of safety professionals. The assigned duty station can be at any one of our L&I office locations Statewide. Learn more about DOSH here: 50 Years of DOSH Duties What You’ll Do Lead and develop a team of Process Safety Management investigators performing complex compliance inspections and accident investigations. Conduct inspections/investigations at large commercial or industrial construction sites or refineries and chemical manufacturers during maintenance “shut-down” periods, to include High Hazard Facility (HHF) inspections to evaluate compliance with RCW 49.80. Conduct inspections/investigations at Process Safety Management (PSM) facilities where highly flammable, corrosive, reactive or toxic chemicals are stored in quantities at or above the threshold listed in WAC 296-67, Safety Standards for Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals. Direct responses to fatalities, catastrophic incidents, chemical releases, and other high‑profile workplace events. Accompany investigators as well as conduct independent investigations. Coach, mentor, train, and evaluate investigators while promoting consistency, quality, and technical excellence. Review inspection reports, investigations, and enforcement actions to ensure legal and technical accuracy. Collaborate with engineers, attorneys, emergency responders, industry representatives, federal agencies, and other regulatory partners. Help shape statewide inspection strategies, workload planning, and continuous improvement initiatives. Serve as a technical resource on Washington's Process Safety Management regulations and enforcement. And much more! Driving is an essential function of this position. The incumbent is required to travel between worksites to perform assigned duties and must operate a state‑issued vehicle, motor pool vehicle, or personally owned vehicle (POV), as appropriate. Use of a POV will be reimbursed at the current state mileage reimbursement rate. This is an active leadership role that combines office work with regular field responsibilities. Must be able to safely navigate a variety of work environments, including large manufacturing facilities with metal stairways, catwalks, ladders, and uneven terrain. Must also be able to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, using appropriate protective gear. Travel & Work Schedule This position offers variety and meaningful work, but it also requires flexibility. Because workplace emergencies don't always happen during business hours, this position must be able to: Travel throughout the state with occasional overnight travel. Respond to fatalities, catastrophes, and other urgent incidents that may occur outside normal business hours. Occasionally work evenings, weekends, or extended hours to support critical investigations and operational needs. What We’re Looking For We're seeking a collaborative leader who brings: Extensive Process Safety Management experience Excellent coaching and employee development abilities Sound judgment during emergency and high‑profile situations Exceptional communication and relationship‑building skills The ability to make confident decisions in complex technical environments Qualifications REQUIRED: 1 year of supervisory or leadership experience A valid and unrestricted driver's license The ability to take action to learn and grow. The ability to take action to meet the needs of others. And One Of The Following Six years’ experience as a DOSH Compliance Industrial Safety and Health Investigator, at the CISHI 3 or 4 level or equivalent experience as a Federal OSHA or other state plan journey‑level safety and health specialist or industrial hygienist, with at least one of those years working on Process Safety Management inspections/investigations. OR Seven years of full‑time experience as an employer’s safety director or manager, industrial hygienist, or safety and health specialist. This experience must be from facilities with PSM covered processes and the work involved ensuring compliance with WAC 296-67 , Safety Standards for Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals, or equivalent OSHA or other state‑plan state regulations. Qualifying experience" is defined as experience [conducting independent WISHA or OSHA safety and health inspections in the workplace; or regulatory related inspections in the workplace, including construction, manufacturing and other industries; investigating accidents; and writing technical reports as a Safety & Health Officer, Consultant, Inspector, or WISHA or OSHA inspection, or regulatory related experience. Desired Professional certifications are highly valued, including: Certified Safety Professional (CSP) Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) Certified Marine Chemist (CMC) Bilingual preferred; persons of all languages are encouraged to apply.
