Overview The Marion County Public Defender Agency provides legal representation for Marion County residents who cannot afford a private lawyer in matters involving liberty interests, including criminal, civil commitment, juvenile, and appeals cases. The agency serves felony, misdemeanor, Title IV D, and child welfare courts, and promotes educational and programmatic initiatives related to jail sentencing. Job Summary This position is responsible for the effective representation of counsel to indigent persons charged in Level 6 or equivalent lower felony, juvenile, problem‑solving, and appellate cases. The role involves independent judgment, complex decision‑making, and policy interpretation, reporting directly to the Division Chief. Position Responsibilities Appear in court to provide effective representation of counsel to indigent persons. Conduct legal and factual review of the case; evaluate evidence; engage in pre‑trial motion practice; take and defend depositions. Consult with clients, interview witnesses, and consult medical, forensic, DNA, or other experts as needed. Negotiate case disposition with opposing counsel, including plea agreements, and litigate cases to trial or appellate court. Communicate with clients through phone, in‑person interviews, and jail consultations. Review and update court files; keep clients and families informed of case progress. Delegate assignments to paralegals and investigators when appropriate. Collaborate with social workers on multidisciplinary strategies to achieve client objectives. Maintain confidentiality at all times. Perform additional duties as assigned by management. Qualifications Juris Doctorate and admission to practice law. Strong verbal, written, communication, and presentation skills. Excellent interpersonal and facilitation abilities. Computer proficiency required. Valid driver’s license. Compliance with Indiana Public Defender Commission standards and guidelines. CHINS Division Attorneys must have completed one additional year of service. Working Conditions Essential functions are performed in an office setting without exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Physical Conditions Sitting at a desk for the majority of the day. Occasional lifting or carrying of light-weight objects (5–10 pounds). Extended keyboard or workstation use. Requires hearing, visual perception, and oral communication skills. #J-18808-Ljbffr
