Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services, the Counseling and Psychological Services Coordinator coordinates clinical services and provides mental health counseling to Gallaudet students and community clients.

Job Description:

Clinical Activities and Operations

• Assists the Director in the development and implementation of clinical policies and procedures in accordance with legal guidelines for service delivery and standards of care; assists the Director with accreditation reports for the center; coordinates client services procedures including screenings, intakes, crisis procedures, schedules, client assignments, tracking students, and assessment of services.

• Reviews and assigns clinical cases to the trainees and staff, following the clinical and clerical procedures of CAPS to provide efficient and appropriate services to clients.

• Develops and maintains schedules for CAPS services and training programs, including the on-call schedule, Case Conference schedule, professional development activities, trainee activities, etc.

• Assists the Training team with the interview and selection process for the trainees.

• Assists the administrative team with the collection of CAPS assessment and evaluation data including student-learning outcomes and client satisfaction data.

• Assists the Director in hiring new staff; supervises student workers as requested; and assists in the ongoing development of the CAPS training program.

• Maintains close working relationships with other university departments, including academic departments and student service departments, and provides guest lectures in academic classes; and provides consultation to staff and faculty in areas of counseling and mental health; and represents CAPS on campus-wide committees at the request of the Director.

• Provides consultation for community agencies, parents and other individuals on topics of mental health with deaf individuals; presents at conferences, workshops and training seminars for community groups.

• Maintains and strengthens the contacts and cooperative relationships with students, staff, faculty and university administrators; plans and implements campus-wide programs, workshops and other activities designed to foster mental health; and participates in workshops, screening events, trainings, paraprofessional programs, and other prevention programs; and oversees preparation and dissemination of public relations materials, brochures, website and social media sites for CAPS.

• Assists in the planning, development, and coordination of local, national, and international mental health workshops, conferences, conventions, and symposia sponsored by CAPS.

Health Mental Counseling

• Provides counseling services to the clients through individual, group, couples and family therapy; conducts initial intake interviews and evaluations; and supervises and participates in the training of Gallaudet graduate students and other trainees in the field of mental health.

• Completes all clinical and administrative documentation in an accurate, legal and timely manner.

• Engages in crisis intervention and prevention; participates in CAPS’ emergency on-call system; assists the Director in providing emergency back-up services for the CAPS emergency plan; and provides referrals to psychologists, psychiatrists, hospitals, and other referral agencies as needed.

• Keeps abreast of developments and research in counseling, mental health issues, educational issues, and other related areas; continues own professional development by participating in continuing education programs; and maintains active memberships in professional organizations.

• Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Required Qualifications:

• Master’s degree.

• A minimum of two years of professional experience with mental health counseling, psychological services, or a related field.

• Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in the District of Columbia.

• Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Clinical experience with deaf and hard of hearing populations.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities:

• Strong organizational, time management, and cross-cultural counseling skills.

• Strong knowledge of counseling theories and clinical practices, including crisis intervention, clinical supervision, and addressing a broad range of mental health concerns.

• Strong skills in the educational, psychological, social, and vocational implications of deafness, with experience serving deaf and hard of hearing individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds.

• Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
