GEOLOGIST I (Case Manager)

Job Summary The Geologist I provides frontline review, evaluation, and management for conditions of known or suspected oil contamination in the Western Region of the Oil Control Program’s (OCP) Remediation Division. The incumbent works in the field primarily in Prince George’s, Calvert, Charles and St. Mary’s counties, and may be asked to assist in other counties as required by case load and availability of personnel. The position requires reporting to the Baltimore headquarters at least one day per week. Responsibilities include: Reviewing and evaluating conditions of known or suspected oil contamination to determine the extent, level, and type of investigation and remediation needed. Assessing when site investigation and remediation have been completed. Evaluating the threat or risk to public health and the environment. Providing technical expertise and ensuring enforcement of applicable statutes, regulations, permits, and policies pertinent to OCP. Working Conditions Exposure to uncomfortable or unpleasant surroundings. Working conditions may include rough terrain, inclement weather, extreme heat or cold, plants with briars or capable of causing allergic response, and other site‑specific conditions. Exposure to hazardous conditions, which may result in injury. Field work may involve exposure to standard hazards associated with industrial/manufacturing and construction sites. Special physical demands such as lifting 50 pounds or more. Employees may be required to lift heavy manhole covers, sampling equipment, and supplies, climb ladders, and wear respiratory protection while performing work activities. Use of protective equipment such as hard‑hat, safety shoes, goggles, gloves, mask, etc. Minimum Qualifications Education: A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Geology, Environmental Geology, or a related earth science. Experience: None. Note: Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a commissioned officer in physical science classification or physical science specialty codes in the geology field of work on a year‑for‑year basis for the required education. Desired or Preferred Qualifications Willingness to perform work in both office and field settings. Coursework in Physical Geology and Hydrogeology. Knowledge of Maryland regulations regarding oil spills and cleanup requirements. Strong oral and written communication skills. Possession of OSHA 40‑hour Hazardous Waste Site Worker (Hazwoper) training. Licenses, Registrations and Certifications Employees may be required to possess a valid motor vehicle operator’s license in the State of Maryland. Employees may be required to successfully complete and maintain the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) 29 CFR 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification. Special Requirements Employees may be required to walk over rough or unstable terrain or over long distances while wearing personal protective equipment such as respiratory protection. Employees may be subject to ongoing medical testing in accordance with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.120 Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response.
