Auxiliary OperatorFaribault Energy Park is a 265 MW combined-cycle facility owned by the Minnesota Municipal Power Agency (MMPA). Meticulously developed to be both environmentally conscious and aesthetically appealing to the immediate surrounding area, the plant blends sustainability with efficient power generation. Powered by a GE Frame 7FA dual-fuel combustion turbine generator (CTG), and a A10 GE Steam Turbine, along with innovative resource management practices such as rainwater collection.Opportunity SummaryAs an Auxiliary Operator, you will be required to operate & maintain power plant major systems and sub systems in a safe and efficient manor under the supervision of the Control Room Operator. You will train to become a system expert on all plant systems providing technical assistance to management and maintenance personnel. While performing your job duties, you will be given the tools and training to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to achieve the next career progression of Control Room Operator.Primary FunctionsYour scope of responsibility as Auxiliary Operator will include the following primary functions:Assist in the start-up, shutdown, and routine operations of power plant systems, ensuring all processes are carried out safely and efficiently.Operate and monitor major auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feedwater treatment systems, wastewater systems, generator cooling systems, and boiler feedwater and condensate systems, as well as locally controlled electrical and mechanical systems, ensuring optimal functionality.Perform operational tests, inspections, and diagnostics, making necessary repairs and adjustments to assigned equipment to maintain peak operating conditions.Execute orders from the Control Room Operator to clear equipment or prepare it for service at isolated panels, adhering to operating instructions and procedures. This includes clearing, tagging, testing, and securing operations with safety tape to ensure safety and proper functioning.Conduct routine water chemistry analysis and operate continuous emissions monitoring equipment to ensure compliance with environmental and operational standards.Maintain accurate, up-to-date logs of operations, ensuring all records are complete and in compliance with regulatory requirements.Report abnormal or irregular conditions during operations and take corrective action in accordance with established procedures to prevent operational disruptions.Assist maintenance personnel during maintenance periods to ensure that systems are restored to full operational status.Perform additional duties as assigned by the control room or plant management, supporting efficient plant operations.Maintain and expand both theoretical and practical knowledge of the plant.Continuously seek new and improved ways to perform duties, actively pursuing information through self-study and training.Monitor plant health by observing operations, conducting inspections, and analyzing water chemistry, while staying alert for signs of faulty equipment or issues.Respond immediately to developing trends, alarms, and plant upsets, ensuring the Control Room Operator is informed of all plant conditions.Communicate plant status and trends clearly, including detailed written and electronic logs, verbal updates to the Control Room Operator, and turnover to the oncoming shift. Document inspections, reports, and plant data during periodic rounds.Assist in updating plant procedures by incorporating lessons learned and best practices.Lead by example in following safe work practices, contributing to the development of safety policies, and participating in root cause analysis and safety incident reviews.Perform preventative maintenance and assist the Maintenance Department with corrective maintenance as needed.Perform additional duties as assigned by the control room or plant management, supporting efficient plant operations.SafetySafety is a core value at NAES, and as a condition of employment, all employees are expected to remain mentally alert and work safely at all times. Adherence to these safety responsibilities is one of the key factors in the evaluation of each employee's performance.Working RelationshipsThe Auxiliary Plant Operator reports to the Operations Manager and takes direction from the Plant Manager or Control Room Operator depending on assigned duties. The Auxiliary Operator will also coordinate with other plant personnel on matters pertaining to the safe and efficient operation of the combined cycle generation facility.Physical Requirements and Working ConditionsPhysical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.Fitness for DutyAll personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.Work ScheduleThis position follows a rotating 12-hour shift schedule consisting of 7 consecutive day shifts, 7 days off, 7 consecutive night shifts, and another 7 days off. The role will also occasionally require extended hours and flexible shifts, including weekends and holidays, based on operational schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or 'on-call' status will also be required.CompensationThe initial starting hourly rate of pay will range from $31.10 to $43.63 per hour and will include an annual performance bonus.Job QualificationsWe are seeking a skilled Operator with a foundation in power generation operations, along with a proven ability to support team success and consistently meet performance standards.Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school. Associate degree in Power Plant Technology, Engineering, Process Technology, or a related field is preferred.Must currently hold and maintain a valid Minnesota Special Engineer (Boiler) License or be able to obtain one within 30 days of employment.Proven track record in technician or operations roles within power generation, with hands-on experience in operating and maintaining major auxiliary equipment, including air compressors, circulating water systems, boiler feedwater treatment systems, wastewater systems, generator cooling systems, and associated electrical and mechanical systems.Experience with water chemistry control, water condition analysis, water treatment facility operations, and chemical handling is preferred, but not necessary.Theoretical and/or practical knowledge of combustion/steam turbine operations, closed system steam generation, industrial safety, hazardous waste management, and plant parameter inspection/recording is desirable, but not mandatory.Proficiency in mechanical systems, such as pumps, compressors, and turbines, is often required for maintenance and troubleshooting tasks.Knowledge and a basic understanding of electrical systems, including high-voltage safety protocols and basic electrical theory.Familiarity with piping and instrumentation schematics and process controls is beneficial, but not essential.Knowledge of safety regulations and certifications, such as OSHA or NFPA, is critical, especially in hazardous environments.Effective problem-solving skills with strong written and verbal communication, and the mathematical ability to explain complex concepts clearly.Must possess a valid and unrestricted driver's license, ensuring it remains in good standing at all times.About NAESNAES Corporation is a leading provider of operations, maintenance, and engineering services for energy facilities.
