About the Department The Department of Forestry and Environmental Resources has a wide variety of strengths in forestry and natural resources management, policy and economics, environmental science and technology, wildlife and conservation biology, tree improvement, silviculture, forest biotechnology, and international forestry. The Department has over 90 full‑time faculty and staff, and more than 750 undergraduate and 150 graduate students. Faculty, staff, and students work together with business, industry, government, community groups, and non‑government organizations to address a wide range of challenges facing our state and the world. Key Responsibilities Serve as the department liaison for all FER‑affiliated student clubs (e.g., Forestry Club, Leopold Club, SAF, American Fisheries Society, Xi Sigma Pi, NR Leadership Board). Assist student officers in navigating university systems, planning high‑impact events, and professionalizing their organizations. Facilitate student access to departmental, college and university resources to support travel to regional and national professional conferences. Residential Logistics Manage the logistics for the Forestry Summer Practicum and the Fisheries, Wildlife, and Conservation Biology (FWCB) Summer Practicum. Coordinate site use with Forest Assets and oversee residential logistics, including contracts, housing assignments, and facility readiness. Supervise camp cooks and kitchen staff; manage meal planning, food procurement budgets, and kitchen inventory for varied student cohorts. Negotiate and manage contracts and invoicing with external vendors for equipment, transportation, and field supplies. Field Program Act as the primary point of contact for Health Inspectors at Camp Slocum; ensure kitchen and residential facilities meet all regulatory standards. Coordinate the collection of student health forms, liability waivers, and emergency contact data; maintain organized records for faculty and management. Support student orientation meetings and communications. Identify and report facility hazards or safety concerns to Forest Assets or departmental leadership for resolution. Ensure students, cooks, and staff are briefed on existing departmental safety protocols and university field‑work standards. Support the Enhancement and International Committees and Academic Programs Provide professional support for global initiatives, including faculty‑led study abroad logistics and international field research planning. Assist students in both Forestry and FWCB with travel registries, international insurance compliance, and grant application processes for international travel. Facilitate the application and disbursement process for funds management by the Enhancement Fund Committee and the International Committee, ensuring equitable promotion and access to all student populations, and full compliance with university regulations. Facilitate planning and utilization of department operational funds allocated to program coordinators for community‑building and professional development. Facilitate planning and coordination of group advising meetings in curricula for teaching faculty (including confirming faculty participation, compiling and distributing materials, communicating with students, and arranging for rooms and refreshments). Student Travel Authorizations and Reimbursements Enter TAs and TRs for student travelers, including all first‑time travelers, with an emphasis on undergraduates and international travel. Ensure wise use of funds and compliance with all university regulations. Guide students through university travel registries and insurance requirements (e.g., GeoBlue) for high‑impact domestic and global experiences. Departmental Event & Internal Communications Plan and execute departmental events, including symposiums, guest lectures, and graduation celebrations. Maintain and update physical communication boards within the department to highlight student achievements, club news, and upcoming field opportunities. Ensure departmental spaces reflect the active research and field‑work culture of both Forestry and FWCB programs. Build rapport with varied student populations and mentor them through the "hidden curriculum" of professional networking, field readiness, and travel for professional development and research. Communicate across vastly different audiences. Coordinate logistics (food, housing, transport) in off‑grid or field‑station environments like Camp Slocum. Manage external service providers and ensure deliverables meet the department’s standards for quality and safety. Balance the cyclical high‑season of summer field programs with the year‑round administrative needs of faculty committees and student clubs. Manage multiple funding streams (Enhancement Funds, fees and tuition revenues for the summer practicum) with high accuracy and transparency. Know or quickly learn food safety codes, university travel policies, and field‑work liability requirements. Maintain sensitive student data (medical/emergency forms) with strict attention to privacy and accessibility. Other Responsibilities Other duties as assigned by supervisor and Department Head. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. Preferred Qualifications Professional experience in program coordination, student affairs, or field‑based operations. Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders, including students, faculty, industry executives, and external vendors. Familiarity with NC State travel, procurement, and HR systems. Required License or Certification Valid NC Driver’s License required.
