Summary This position is located at Bureau of Engraving and Printing, within the Plate Printing Division, Washington, DC facility. As an Intermediate Plate Printer, you will perform work under the direction of a journeyperson Plate Printer to include work utilizing a variety of complex and high-speed intaglio presses printing U.S. currency and other government securities from intaglio plates. Responsibilities As an Intermediate Plate Printer, you will: Set up and operate intaglio printing presses to include installing and positioning plates and rollers, secure and check materials needed such as paper, inks, rigging boards, wiping rolls, etc., and make all adjustments to peripheral devices and attachments as needed. Use and maintain tools and measuring instruments associated with printing operations. Use trade and technical practices in the operation of Intaglio printing presses. Interpret instructions, specifications, etc. to complete assignments with less than normal supervision. Monitor electronic press systems and inspection systems and maintain close, multi-color registration on high-speed production presses. *To complete the Intermediate Plate Printer program, you must successfully complete 4160 hours of on-the-job training, and you must continually update technical knowledge of new presses and plate printing techniques. Pass a pre-employment physical examination. Wear required safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include safety shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, masks, etc. Shift Work: This facility operates on a 24 hour per day, three-shift basis. Assignment to a specific shift cannot be guaranteed. The successful applicant must be available to work on all three shifts (day/evening/midnight) on a rotational basis. Weekend work and overtime, if applicable, will be scheduled when needed based on production requirements as determined by Management. There is also moderate to heavy lifting of materials. Pushing and pulling requirements by use of a manual floor jack for moving loads up to and around the equipment.Good eyesight is required as well as hand-eye coordination. Eyesight required is use of both eyes, depth perception, ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Hearing required (aid permitted).Manual dexterity is required for the operation and adjustment of equipment and for the hand operations associated with printing activities. Must be extremely alert and attentive to work and equipment operations to ensure accuracy, detect equipment malfunctions and defective products, to avoid spoilage, and to ensure adherence to all safety requirements.
