Job Description and Duties

Under the direction of the Captain, the Camp Commander is responsible for the operation and management of the camp including the custody, discipline and welfare of the incarcerated individuals. The Camp Commander is responsible for directing all incarcerated individual programs including feeding, housing, housekeeping, laundry, medical/dental, counseling, disciplinary, canteen, hobby, recreation, mail, visiting, education, religion, and assignments. The position requires that the Camp Commander maintain a close liaison with the CALFIRE staff, local law enforcement agencies, local government and community organizations to ensure cooperation, support, and effective communications to facilitate the custody of incarcerated individuals and the camp conservation program. The Camp Commanders primary role is maintenance of a safe and secure environment for the incarcerated individuals, staff and public. The Camp Commander is responsible for scheduling and training of all BU6 staff. The Camp Commander is also responsible for maintaining accountability for all keys, radios, tools, security equipment and maintenance, and weapons and weapon equipment. The position is responsible for the direction and supervision of the Correctional Sergeant(s), Correctional Officers, and incarcerated individuals assigned to the camp.

Individuals who are eligible for a Training and Development assignment may also be considered for this position(s).

Effective July 1, 2025, the Personal Leave Program 2025 (PLP 2025) was implemented. PLP 2025 requires that each full-time employee receive a 3 percent reduction in pay in exchange for 5 hours of PLP 2025 leave credits monthly through June 30, 2027. Salaries do not reflect the recent changes.

Working Conditions

About this location --  The primary mission of Sierra Conservation Center (SCC) is to provide housing, programs and services for minimum and medium custody incarcerated individuals, to aid in their rehabilitation. SCC is responsible for the training and placement of male incarcerated individuals in the Conservation Camp Program. SCC administers male camps located throughout California.

Knowledge of: SOMS the principles and practices of incarcerated person discipline, Incident Report Tracking System (CDCR 837), and Departmental Use of Force policy to ensure safety/security and meet the mission of the Department. The principles and practices of correctional business management/administration to ensure safety/security and meet the mission of the Department. The principles and practices of personnel management, supervision and staff discipline to direct and manage an area of responsibility and meet the mission of the Department. Custody level and classification of the incarcerated person population, issues, and behaviors of persons under restraint to maintain awareness and ensure safety/security. Firearms and safe operational procedures to ensure safe and proper carry/operation. The job requirements and work performed by incarcerated persons in facilities/camps to ensure compliance with departmental/legal mandates and maintain safety/security. Institution/camp sanitation and health/safety standards to ensure compliance and maintain safety/security. The principles and methods of training to ensure a qualified workforce, provide opportunity for upward mobility and meet the mission of the Department. The purposes, activities, regulations and functions of term-setting authorities (e.g., Board of Parole Hearings, State Personnel Board, etc.) to ensure compliance with Federal and State laws. Interviewing and investigative techniques to obtain information from staff, incarcerated persons, the public, and outside agencies. A supervisor’s role in the Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) Program and the processes available to meet EEO objectives to maintain a fair and lawful work environment. Lawsuits (e.g., Coleman, Clark, Plata, Armstrong, etc.) affecting the Department to ensure compliance with Federal and State laws. Computer usage and software programs (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Microsoft Word, Strategic Offenders Management System [SOMS], etc.) to maintain accurate records and communicate effectively. The Office of Offender Grievances (OOG) process to maintain active and objective transparency in completing offender grievances.

Promote professional attitudes and behavior among staff and incarcerated persons to ensure safety, security, and the efficiency of the institution. Communicate effectively (e.g., verbal, electronic, written, etc.) with individuals and/or groups to provide information, instruction/direction, and maintain effective working relationships. Prepare and review reports to provide information and/or documentation.
