Since 1976, St. Joseph Center has been meeting the needs of low-income and homeless individuals and families in Venice, Santa Monica, Mar Vista, and surrounding communities. The Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit community organization that assists people without regard for religious affiliation or lack thereof through comprehensive case management and integrated social service programs. The Center enjoys broad-based community support as well as a sponsored relationship with its founders, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet. St. Joseph Center serves approximately 6,000 individuals annually.

Brief Description of Principal Activities

Multifaceted intervention, prevention, and education services are carried out at four sites on the Westside of Los Angeles. St. Joseph Center’s integrated programs provide clients with concentrated and coordinated access to services according to the nature of their needs.

About the Role

The Community Impact Coordinator builds and strengthens relationships between the Care Campus and the diverse community it serves. The position develops partnerships with Skid Row residents, individuals with lived experience, community-based and social justice organizations, service providers, neighborhood stakeholders, faith communities, advocacy groups, law enforcement and public safety partners, local government and elected officials’ offices, and other community partners to promote collaboration, trust, community engagement, and shared impact.

What You'll Do

Community Engagement and Relationship Building

• Develop and maintain authentic, collaborative relationships with Skid Row residents, individuals with lived experience, community leaders, grassroots organizations, social justice and advocacy groups, neighborhood stakeholders, faith communities, law enforcement and public safety partners, local government and elected officials’ offices, and other community partners.
• Maintain a regular presence in the Skid Row community and participate in relevant neighborhood meetings, coalitions, events, forums, and community activities.
• Serve as an accessible point of contact for community members, organizations, public agencies, and other stakeholders seeking to engage with the Care Campus.
• Proactively engage stakeholders to better understand community priorities, concerns, strengths, resources, and opportunities for collaboration.
• Build relationships across diverse perspectives and organizations while promoting respectful dialogue and constructive partnership.
• Identify opportunities to strengthen trust, communication, and collaboration between the Care Campus and the surrounding community.

Government and Public Safety Partnerships

• Develop and maintain productive working relationships with relevant law enforcement and public safety partners, including the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), to support communication and coordination regarding issues affecting the Care Campus and surrounding community.
• Build relationships with local elected officials’ offices, government agencies, and other public-sector stakeholders connected to Skid Row and the Care Campus.
• Serve as a liaison for routine communication with government and public safety partners, coordinating with Care Campus and organizational leadership as appropriate.
• Facilitate meetings, site visits, introductions, and other engagement opportunities between Care Campus leadership and public-sector partners.
• Help communicate community and campus concerns to appropriate public-sector partners and support collaborative problem-solving when appropriate.
• Track requests, commitments, concerns, and follow-up items resulting from meetings or engagement with government and public safety partners.
• Coordinate with organizational External Affairs, Communications, Government Relations, or other designated leadership on matters involving elected officials, government agencies, media-sensitive issues, or broader public policy considerations.

Safety, Crisis, and Overdose Response

• Maintain awareness of participant, community, and environmental safety while working on the Care Campus and in the surrounding Skid Row neighborhood.
• Recognize and appropriately respond to behavioral health crises, medical emergencies, suspected overdoses, escalating situations, and other safety concerns within the scope of the position.
• Use trauma-informed engagement and trained de-escalation techniques when appropriate and seek assistance from Safety, clinical staff, emergency responders, or other appropriate resources when additional intervention is needed.
• Complete all required organizational and program-specific training, including harm reduction, overdose recognition and response, opioid overdose reversal using naloxone (Narcan), de-escalation, emergency response, CPR, and other health and safety training as assigned.
• Respond within the scope of training to suspected overdoses and other medical emergencies, including administering naloxone (Narcan) when indicated and activating appropriate emergency response resources in accordance with established protocols.
• Promptly report significant safety concerns, incidents, or community conditions to appropriate Care Campus leadership.
• Maintain professional boundaries and follow established procedures when responding to challenging or potentially unsafe situations.

Qualifications

What You'll Bring

• Minimum of five years of experience in community engagement, community outreach, community relations, organizing, public affairs, human services, homeless services, or another community-facing role.
• Demonstrated experience building and maintaining relationships with diverse community members, organizations, and stakeholders.
• Experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness, communities with complex social-service needs, or within the Skid Row/Downtown Los Angeles community strongly preferred.
• Experience engaging with public agencies, government representatives, advocacy organizations, public safety partners, or other external stakeholders preferred.
• Bachelor’s degree in human services, social work, sociology, public administration, public health, communications, community development, or a related field preferred, but not required.
• An equivalent combination of relevant education, professional experience, community-based experience, and transferable skills may be considered.
• Strong communication and listening skills
• Demonstrated ability to build trust across differing perspectives
• Sound judgment and professional boundaries
• Ability to facilitate meetings and follow through on commitments
• Comfort working independently in a highly visible community-facing role

Work Environment

Regular use of a computer and HR technology platforms is required, along with the ability to manage detailed records and sustained periods of screen-based work. The role follows a hybrid work arrangement with regular onsite presence and occasional travel among Los Angeles-area locations.
