Police Officer (Lateral)

Job Summary We are seeking a Police Officer to patrol an assigned area, enforce public safety laws, respond to calls, investigate incidents, and maintain community relations. The role involves foot or vehicle patrols, first‑aid response, evidence handling, and participation in specialized units such as S.W.A.T., K‑9, or Field Training Officer. Essential Duties Patrols an assigned area on foot or by vehicle and enforces federal, state, and local laws. Responds to radio calls and citizen requests for protection of life, property, and public assistance. Provides first‑aid or CPR as a first responder. Investigates crime scenes, apprehends suspects, and prepares related reports. Conducts preliminary investigations of disturbances, burglaries, thefts, and vehicle accidents. Assists in crime scene evidence preservation, arrests, and booking reports. Interrogates suspects, interviews victims and witnesses, and completes police field reports. Follows up on investigations and monitors parolees or probationers. Intervenes in disputes and assists other public‑safety agencies. Builds positive community relationships and attends public meetings. Participates in daily briefings, training, and shooting range proficiency. Engages in specialized assignments (Detective, Traffic, S.W.A.T., etc.) as assigned. Minimum Qualification Guidelines Education/Training/Experience High‑school graduation or G.E.D. required. Apostate of up to 60 semester‑level units in general education and police science considered desirable. Academy Graduate/Police Officer candidates must be graduates of a P.O.S.T. Certified Basic Academy. Lateral Police Officer candidates must have at least one year current employment as a peace officer and a valid Basic P.O.S.T. Certificate. Licenses / Certificates Valid Class C California driver’s license with acceptable record. Completion of specialty training and certification within one year of assignment. Knowledge Of Police science principles, federal and state constitutional rights, PW laws, and court decisions. Local ordinances, departmental policies, and criminal evidence rules. Crime‑prevention principles, investigative methods, self‑defense, radio communication, and public‑relations techniques. Ability To Operate motor vehicles, radios, computers, firearms, and non‑lethal weapons. Apply laws and regulations, prepare and present accurate reports. Build relationships with staff, management, and community groups. Communicate effectively, maintain self‑control, and think logically in emergencies. Work extended hours and refrain from tobacco use on or off duty. Special Requirements Ability to work extended hours to meet shift needs. Age Must be at least 21 years of age. Citizenship Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident alien eligible for citizenship. Psychological Applicants undergo a psychological assessment by a qualified professional.
