Position The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas is seeking to fill Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) positions in the Criminal Division. The position is a term appointment through September 30, 2029 within grades AD 21 to AD 29. Responsibilities Prosecuting a variety of violations and enforcing federal laws related to organized crime, financial litigation, immigration, drugs, firearms, public corruption, asset forfeiture, and white‑collar crime. Conducting courtroom appearances and presenting cases before federal courts. Investigating and prosecuting complex criminal offenses. Preparing legal research, writing, pleadings, and day‑to‑day correspondence. Qualifications Required Qualifications: J.D. degree (or equivalent) and active membership in a U.S. bar at the time of entry on duty. United States citizenship. Residency within the Southern District of Texas or within 25 miles. Successful completion of pre‑employment adjudication (fingerprint, credit, tax checks, drug testing). Registration for Selective Service, if applicable. Preferred Qualifications: Strong academic credentials and superior legal research and writing skills. High‑volume courtroom experience, including first‑chair jury trials. Excellent organizational, time‑management, and interpersonal skills. Experience in grand jury practice and investigative and prosecution techniques. Computer proficiency and ability to independently conduct legal research and prepare correspondence. Conditions of Employment Applicants must be a United States Citizen or National. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication. Continued employment depends upon a favorable background investigation. Applicants must be registered for Selective Service, if required. Applicants must reside in the Southern District or within 25 miles. Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar. Compensation and Benefits The salary range for this position is $76,748 to $197,100, including 17.06% locality pay. The Department of Justice offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes paid vacation, sick leave, holidays, life insurance, health benefits, and participation in the Federal Employees Retirement System. Travel and Relocation 1 to 5 nights of travel per month, on average. Relocation expenses are not authorized.
