POSITION SUMMARY

The Minneapolis American Indian Center (MAIC) seeks a skilled and mission-aligned Senior Accountant to serve as a hands-on accounting professional for the organization. Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, this role is responsible for the day-to-day accounting operations of MAIC including accounts payable processing, payroll preparation, grant billing and compliance, and sales tax reporting. The Senior Accountant will work in close partnership with the CFO to ensure accurate financial records, strong internal controls, and timely reporting that supports MAIC's mission of serving the American Indian community in Minneapolis. RESPONSIBILITIES

Day-to-Day Accounting Operations

• Perform monthly bank and account reconciliations, investigating and resolving discrepancies in a timely manner
• Assist the CFO in executing a timely monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process
• Accurate and timely invoice entry, ensuring proper coding to the correct accounts, grants, and cost centers

Payroll Preparation

• Prepare and process biweekly payroll accurately and on time for all MAIC employees
• Ensure proper allocation of payroll costs to the correct grants, programs, and cost centers in coordination with program managers
• Coordinate with HR and CFO on new hire setup, terminations, benefit deductions, and garnishments
• Support onboarding of new staff related to expense reporting, finance systems, and accounting procedures

Grant Billing & Compliance

• Prepare and submit accurate, timely grant billings and drawdown requests to Federal and other funding agencies (e.g., via Payment Management System, ASAP, or agency-specific portals)
• Monitor grant budgets and track expenditures against approved award amounts, flagging variances to the CFO and Program Directors
• Coordinate with program staff to ensure grant expenditures are allowable and properly supported
• Track grant periods of performance and support timely closeout and final reporting

Sales Tax Reporting & Compliance

• Prepare and file accurate sales and use tax returns on a quarterly basis

Financial Reporting Support

• Prepare reconciliations, and schedules to support the CFO's financial reports to the Finance Committee and Board of Directors
• Assist with the annual budget development process and multi-year financial planning led by the CFO
• Support annual audit preparation by organizing workpapers, reconciliations, and documentation for external auditors

QUALIFICATIONS

Required

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
• 4-6 years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on general ledger, accounts payable, payroll preparation, and grant accounting
• Demonstrated experience managing Federal grants
• Proficiency with QuickBooks or comparable accounting software
• Familiarity with sales tax compliance
• Understanding of GAAP and nonprofit accounting principles
• Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook
• Exceptional attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to manage multiple deadlines independently
• Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to collaborate across departments and explain financial information clearly

Preferred

• Experience with Federal payment portals (e.g., PMS, ASAP, Grants.gov)
• Familiarity with Single Audit requirements and nonprofit audit preparation
• Experience with AP automation platforms (e.g., Bill.com)
• Experience working with or within Native American tribes, tribal organizations, or Native-serving nonprofits
