United Way of Greenville County serves individuals and families throughout Greenville, Greer, Mauldin, Simpsonville, Fountain Inn, and Travelers Rest, as well as surrounding communities like Berea, Judson, Gantt, Sans Souci, and Taylors.
Position Summary
The Director of Human Resources is a trusted partner to the President & CEO and plays a critical role in building the people, culture, and organizational strength that allow United Way of Greenville County to achieve its mission.
This leader ensures every aspect of Human Resources operates with excellence, from recruiting exceptional talent and supporting employee growth to overseeing payroll, benefits, compliance, and employee relations. Working closely with the CEO and leadership team, the Director translates organizational priorities into practical people strategies and ensures the organization has the people systems, policies, and support needed to achieve its mission.
The Director serves as the operational partner for the organization's people strategy, translating the President & CEO's vision into practical programs, systems, and initiatives that strengthen organizational performance while helping leaders build high-performing teams. The role requires someone who is equally comfortable thinking strategically and executing operationally in a growing and increasingly complex organization.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Build an Exceptional Team
Lead full-cycle recruitment to attract exceptional employees.
Build on an outstanding onboarding experience that helps new team members succeed from day one.
Develop strategies that strengthen employee engagement, professional growth, and retention.
Partner with the CEO and leadership team to ensure the organization's talent, structure, and capacity continue to evolve in support of strategic priorities and future growth.
Partner with Leaders
Serve as a trusted advisor to the President & CEO and leadership team on people and organizational matters.
Develop practical tools, resources, and training that help leaders lead well.
Partner with the CEO to implement organizational initiatives that strengthen culture, leadership, and employee engagement.
Deliver Operational Excellence
Own all Human Resources operations, including payroll, benefits administration, leave management, HRIS, personnel records, policy administration, and compliance.
Continuously improve HR systems and processes so they are efficient, consistent, and easy for employees and managers to navigate.
Ensure employment practices comply with applicable laws while reflecting United Way's values and culture.
Monitor compensation, benefits, and HR practices to help United Way remain a competitive employer.
Lead the organization's performance management processes, ensuring expectations, feedback, development, and accountability are implemented consistently across the organization.
Proactively identify and manage employment-related risk while ensuring organizational policies and practices remain legally compliant, practical, and aligned with United Way's values.
Foster a Healthy Workplace
Create an environment where employees feel respected, supported, and empowered to do their best work.
Address employee questions and workplace concerns with professionalism, sound judgment, and compassion.
Guide leaders and employees through challenging situations in ways that are fair, consistent, and aligned with organizational values.
Help cultivate a culture of accountability, trust, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Support both United Way staff and hosted initiatives by providing consistent HR guidance while recognizing the unique operational needs of different teams and programs.
Represent United Way professionally with external partners, including benefit providers, legal counsel, consultants, recruiters, and other Human Resources partners, to ensure the organization remains informed, competitive, and well-supported.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR
A strategic and operational Human Resources leader who can translate organizational priorities into practical people strategies, programs, systems, and initiatives.
Demonstrated ability to lead recruitment, onboarding, employee engagement, professional growth, retention, performance management, and employee relations.
Experience overseeing payroll, benefits administration, leave management, HRIS, personnel records, policy administration, compliance, compensation, and employment-related risk.
Sound judgment and the ability to advise senior leaders, guide employees through challenging situations, and build high-performing teams.
Ability to operate effectively in a growing and increasingly complex organization while maintaining accurate, efficient, compliant, and trusted HR operations.

QUALIFICATIONS
7-10 years of progressive HR leadership experience
Experience leading through organizational growth and change
Strong working knowledge of HR best practices, compliance, and employment law
Demonstrated ability to influence and build relationships across all levels of an organization
Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree or HR certification preferred
Experience in the nonprofit or human services sector strongly preferred
