Financial Controller

A New York-based construction, property and interiors group is seeking a Financial Controller & Office Manager to oversee its accounting operations and support the day-to-day management of its corporate office. This is a broad, business-critical role supporting several affiliated companies operating across general contracting, real estate, architectural millwork and interior services. The successful candidate will take responsibility for the financial health of the group, including accounting, cash flow, payroll, financial reporting, tax compliance, insurance and internal financial procedures. They will also oversee office operations and ensure employees and project teams have the systems, equipment and administrative support required to operate effectively. This opportunity would suit an experienced, hands-on accounting professional who enjoys working closely with business ownership and is comfortable balancing financial leadership with operational and office-management responsibilities. Key Responsibilities Oversee accounting and financial operations across the group and its affiliated companies. Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and general accounting processes. Monitor cash flow, banking activity and the overall financial performance of the business. Support the preparation and management of company budgets. Establish and maintain accounting policies, procedures and internal controls. Coordinate tax compliance, insurance requirements and other statutory financial responsibilities. Prepare internal and external financial statements. Assist external accountants and auditors with annual reporting, tax preparation and audit requirements. Oversee regulatory reporting, employee notifications and financial compliance obligations. Review financial information and provide accurate reporting to support business decision-making. Human Resources & Employee Administration Support employee hiring, onboarding, training and performance-management processes. Maintain employee files, records and confidential documentation. Assist employees with benefit-related questions and administration. Coordinate payroll and employee benefit processes. Administer the company’s 401(k) plan. Ensure employee information is handled accurately and confidentially. Office & Operational Management Oversee the daily operation and administration of the corporate office. Coordinate IT, phones, computers and equipment for new and existing employees. Ensure technology, utilities and office supplies are established for new projects and appropriately closed out following project completion. Manage office vendors, equipment maintenance, repairs and cleaning services. Maintain office-supply inventory and coordinate orders as required. Prepare documents and provide general clerical and administrative support. Coordinate management calendars, meeting agendas and travel arrangements. Support incoming calls, correspondence and general office communication. Ensure the office remains clean, safe, organised and fully operational. Candidate Profile Seven or more years of professional accounting experience. Strong understanding of accounting operations, cash management, banking processes and financial analysis. Experience managing payroll, accounts payable and accounts receivable. Working knowledge of federal, state and local tax regulations and compliance reporting. Experience preparing financial statements and supporting external accountants or auditors. Strong financial project-management and organisational capabilities. Ability to manage multiple priorities across finance, human resources and office operations. High level of professionalism, discretion and confidentiality. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Comfortable working collaboratively within a hands-on, fully in-office environment. Proficiency with QuickBooks and/or Sage. Strong Microsoft Office skills, particularly Excel and Word. Experience using Google Workspace, including Docs, Sheets and Slides. Ability to learn new accounting, office and operational systems.
