Aquatics Coordinator

Position Summary The Aquatics Coordinator is responsible assisting the Aquatics Director in ensuring safety and quality program delivery. The Aquatics Coordinator will ensure appropriate staffing and instructor/program ratios are observed. Other responsibilities will include assisting the Aquatics Director in staff training and administrative duties. Essential Functions Coordinate, oversee and organize aquatic programs. Provide staff with weekly rosters for enrollment and program‑participant verification. Complete administrative assignments as directed by the Aquatics Director. Assist the Aquatics Director or Management in developing shift schedules; monitor Aquatics Department timesheets. While on duty as a lifeguard, provide continuous, uninterrupted scanning of the pool and aquatic area. Review all emergency procedures and respond to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures. Complete related reports as required. Follow and ensure Minimum Standards of Safety for Aquatic Activities 7.301. Understand and consistently enforce safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area. Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state Health Department code. Perform equipment checks and ensure appropriate equipment is available as needed. Identify ways to improve safety standards. Maintain effective, positive relationships with members, participants and other staff. Continuously monitor the aquatic area for hazardous or unsafe conditions, report immediately to management and take appropriate action. Use problem‑solving skills to make quick decisions, instruct, evaluate, supervise and recognize potential danger or injury. Successfully complete and pass periodic aquatic safety assessments. Attend staff meetings and trainings as required. Uphold YMCA policies for safety, supervision, mandated reporting and risk management. Demonstrate the Six Pillars of Character and YMCA Core Values in all dealings. Demonstrate competencies in the Cause‑Driven Leadership areas and willingness to develop in mission advancement, collaboration, operational effectiveness and personal growth. Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor. Physical Demands Ability to perform the following: Tread water for 2 minutes (legs only) Swim 250 yards of front crawl Swim 50 yards each of: front crawl with the head up; breaststroke; breaststroke with the head up; elementary backstroke kick with hands on the chest Perform a feet‑first surface dive in 8‑10 feet of water (if branch facility accommodates); then swim underwater for 15 feet. Starting in the shallow end of the water, sprint 60 feet and perform an arm‑over‑arm surface dive in 8‑10 feet of water (if branch facility accommodates). Pick up an object from the bottom of the pool, surface, tread water for at least one minute (legs only), replace object back to the bottom and swim remaining length to end of pool, hoist out of water. Immediately begin CPR on an adult manikin for 2 minutes, stand and listen to instructor directions. Sit for extended periods in an elevated chair, remain alert and focused for entire zone of responsibility. Move safely to various locations, including entering/exiting an elevated chair while scanning the zone. Hear noises and distinguish distress signals; understand significant background noise exists. Continuously scan all areas of the pool with clear vision. Perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue. Communicate immediately when responding to an incident or emergency, projecting voice across distances. Perform all rescue, resuscitation, and survival skills. Act swiftly in an emergency and take action even when unsure. Leadership Competencies Critical competencies for this position include: Engaging Community (Collaboration, Communication & Influence, Inclusion) Communication & Influence Critical Thinking & Decision Making Developing Self & Others (Emotional Maturity & Developing Self & Others) Qualifications MUST HAVE CURRENT YMCA Lifeguarding, American Safety & Health Institute, American Red Cross or American Heart Association BLS for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid certifications and Emergency Oxygen Administration. Certified American Red Cross Lifeguards must obtain YMCA Lifeguarding Certification within 90 days of hire. 2-3 years lifeguard experience, preferred. Ability to maintain required certification and demonstrate lifeguard skills per YMCA standards.
