Optical Transport Senior Engineer – Long Haul Wave
Work Location: Denver, CO (preferred) or Mt. Laurel, NJ

• 10+ years of experience with DWDM and Optical Transport Networks in carrier or large-scale service provider environments.
• Hands-on experience with Nokia Optical Platforms (1830 PSS, PSD, PSI-M).
• Experience with Ciena 6500, Waveserver, and RLS optical platforms.
• Strong knowledge of DWDM, ROADM, OSNR, dispersion, optical amplification, wavelength planning, and optical power budgets.
• Proven experience provisioning, troubleshooting, and validating end-to-end optical transport services across multi-vendor environments.

• Perform end-to-end feasibility studies and path design for backbone wavelength services.
• Engineer optical spectrum across complete transport paths, including wavelength assignment, fixed-grid and flex-grid alignment, and spectrum utilization.
• Select appropriate transponders, muxponders, and line-side hardware based on service requirements.
• Validate optical performance against engineering standards and identify hardware or path constraints.
• Document complete service designs, including routing, intermediate sites, ports, and equipment.

• Provision end-to-end wavelength services across Nokia and Ciena optical transport platforms.
• Configure and turn up services on Nokia 1830 PSS, PSD, PSI-M, and related platforms.
• Configure and support Ciena 6500, Waveserver, and RLS platforms.
• Manage service transitions across vendor platforms while maintaining consistent optical and framing parameters.
• Execute provisioning using network management systems while maintaining accurate documentation.

• Validate wavelength services prior to customer handoff through power verification, performance testing, and burn-in validation.
• Troubleshoot complex issues across multi-vendor optical transport networks.
• Diagnose optical impairments including:
  • OSNR
  • Dispersion
  • Span loss
  • Optical power issues
  • Framing errors
  • Timing issues
  • Service-layer alarms
• Coordinate with operations teams, field engineers, and vendor support for issue resolution.
• Provide post-implementation production support.

• Perform service acceptance testing and verify customer acceptance criteria.
• Maintain engineering documentation, circuit labeling, as-built records, and implementation documentation.
• Execute work following approved engineering standards and operational procedures.

• Identify opportunities to automate design, provisioning, validation, and documentation processes.
• Develop and enhance implementation procedures, MOPs, and operational documentation.

• 10+ years of hands-on experience engineering, provisioning, or supporting DWDM and optical transport networks.
• Strong understanding of:
  • DWDM
  • ROADM architectures
  • Optical amplification
  • Wavelength planning
  • Regeneration
  • OSNR
  • Dispersion
  • Optical power budgets
• Experience provisioning and troubleshooting services across major optical transport platforms.
• Ability to troubleshoot end-to-end circuits across complex multi-vendor environments.
• Strong documentation and communication skills.
• Experience working directly with customers, field teams, operations, and vendor support organizations.

• Experience with Nokia 1830 PSS, PSD, PSI-M platforms.
• Experience with Ciena 6500, Waveserver, and RLS optical platforms.
• Experience supporting long-haul or backbone optical transport networks.
• Familiarity with optical network management and orchestration systems.
• Experience with optical service turn-up, customer acceptance testing, and production implementations.
