Public Works District Supervisor
The City of Birmingham is seeking to hire well-qualified, motivated Public Works District Supervisors to plan, organize, evaluate, and control the day-to-day operations of a designated district including scheduling, implementing procedures, assigning equipment and manpower, planning short-term activities, and developing and implementing work objectives for each district. They are responsible for ensuring that all services within the district are performed effectively and efficiently. Supervision of projects by the Public Works District Supervisor may be exercised directly, or through subordinate supervisory personnel. Public Works District Supervisors perform work with considerable independence. Incumbents receive managerial direction with assignments in terms of broad practice, precedents, policies, and goals. Work performed by the Public Works District Supervisor is reviewed through conferences, inspections of work sites, review of reports, and performance evaluations. Work may also be reviewed for the fulfillment of program objectives and for conformance with department policy and practice.
Compensation and benefits include competitive pay and comprehensive benefits packages to include medical and dental insurance, employer-sponsored retirement plan (pension), generous paid holidays, sick and vacation leave, and more. The pay range for this job is $57,595 - $89,356.
Minimum qualifications required for employment consideration for this position include:
- Class B CDL.
- Experience overseeing street and sanitation duties (e.g., collecting refuse, street sweeping, trash and brush pickup) and storm sewer maintenance and repair (e.g., repairing inlets, replacing inlet tops, clearing drains).
- Experience planning, assigning, and reviewing work including establishing daily objectives, providing feedback, guidance, and discipline when needed.
- Experience completing requisitions for the acquisition of safety equipment, tools, and office supplies.
Typical job duties include:
- Preparing, monitoring, and administering departmental or organizational budget by reviewing spending trends, expenditure reports, analyzing financial data and ensuring expenditures are within annual budgetary limits.
- Providing customer service, internally and/or externally, via phone, email or face to face interaction.
- Procuring and/or managing inventory (i.e., supplies and equipment) to ensure the products and services are available to meet the operational needs of each department.
- Managing, coordinating, reviewing, and investigating as necessary all community projects, citizen complaints, and claims by coordinating with public works crews and contracts. Investigating citizen claims and complaints through visual inspection, documentation, and interviews.
- Supervising staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
Physical demands include occasional moderate physical exertion required for occasional prolonged periods of lifting, carrying, balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling. Job may involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.
Work environment includes both indoor office settings and regular field visits to external construction worksites. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. Work may also involve the use of various hand tools such as hammer, screwdrivers, wrenches, etc. Workers may be exposed to weather conditions, such as extreme hot or cold temperatures, or other potentially hazardous conditions such as near roadway traffic, etc.
