Clinical Social Worker - MSW, 24 Hours (Days / Weekends)

Position Summary Under the clinical supervision of the Department Director or Manager (or LCSW / LICSW), a Clinical Social Worker utilizes clinical social work techniques and theory to provide consultation, assessment, treatment interventions, and advocacy for a diverse population of patients and their families. The role implements a biopsychosocial approach to healthcare and collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to provide case management and crisis intervention for complex social factors and determinants of health. Essential Responsibilities / Duties Complete biopsychosocial and specialized trauma assessments using the department’s psychosocial assessment tool. Provide brief, solution‑focused interventions and develop safety plans with patients as needed. Deliver trauma‑informed, strengths‑based crisis interventions on behalf of patients and families. Develop rapport and maintain effective therapeutic relationships with patients and families. Apply social work techniques such as motivational interviewing, reflective listening, and trauma‑focused cognitive‑behavioral treatment to support patients and families. Assist patients and families in coping with newly diagnosed or chronic illness to achieve improved functioning and emotional state. Ensure that admitted patients (inpatient) and family members remain apprised, involved, supported, and treated through the prescribed clinical relationship through at least weekly contacts and whenever a change in care or plan requires more contact. Communicate and collaborate proactively with multidisciplinary medical teams and community providers on behalf of patients and families. Screen and assess patients for needs related to social determinants of health. Screen and assess for protective needs related to child/disabled/child abuse, intimate partner violence, and community violence. Report any and all suspected cases of abuse and neglect and follow up to ensure patients receive timely comprehensive consultations and compliance with legal mandates. Provide referrals, counseling, case management, and advocacy on behalf of patients and families for health issues including substance misuse, disabilities, mental health concerns, homelessness, and end‑of‑life needs. Offer consultation and referrals to community resources and a broad range of services, including healthcare support services, social services, financial assistance, child‑care, housing, financial entitlements, clothing, transportation, and food pantries. Utilize the electronic health record (EPIC) and other IT interfaces as necessary to track and monitor patients. Begin inpatient assessment within 24 hours of referral and complete within two interviews or within seven working days of referral. Begin outpatient assessment as soon as the patient permits and complete within two interviews. Complete assessment for an Emergency Department patient within four hours of discharge. Comply with departmental, regulatory, and professional documentation and data‑collection requirements. Submit department statistics and other required records and reports within specified time frames. Maintain patient confidentiality according to hospital policy. Exercise professional discretion in determining the inclusion of patient information in the medical or departmental clinical record. Document each patient encounter in the medical record or departmental clinical record concurrently, including date, time, title, and signature. Participate in social work committees and departmental work groups. Provide other administrative and special project assistance as required or assigned. Promote a positive and collaborative work environment supportive of the hospital’s missions and goals. Remain knowledgeable of and follow applicable policies, procedures, and work standards, including policy regarding hours of work, absenteeism, and tardiness. Attend required hospital meetings, training sessions, or activities as assigned. Attend scheduled staff meetings and in‑service education program offerings punctually and consistently. Maintain competency in areas of responsibility to ensure quality of care. Ensure that MSW licensure remains active by obtaining continuing education units (CEUs) and maintaining good standing. Receive weekly supervision for all MSW and LCSW full‑time social workers. Receive monthly administrative supervision for all full‑time social workers. Participate in monthly group supervision for all full‑time social workers. Other Duties Perform other duties assigned or as necessary. Adapt flexibly to changing departmental needs, including offering assistance to other team members, adjusting assignments, and other functions. Apply the hospital’s behavioral standards, guided by the NASW Social Work Code of Ethics, to decision making and to facilitate the hospital’s goals and mission. Follow established infection control and safety procedures. Job Requirements Education: Requires a Master’s Degree (MSW) from an accredited School of Social Work, to be obtained prior to employment. Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Required: Must sit for the Massachusetts Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) certification exam within 90 days of hire and obtain certification within 6 months of hire. Experience: Requires one to two years of on‑the‑job training in social work process and community resources related to health, illness, and disability. Pre‑MSW experience will be considered. Knowledge and Skills: Knowledge of community resources and agencies serving adults, children, and families; advanced interpersonal skills for effective interaction with healthcare professionals and for maintaining therapeutic relationships; comfort in a fast‑paced and dynamic environment (sense of humor is valued); ability to work independently and in an interdisciplinary team; cultural sensitivity and comfort with a wide range of racial and ethnic populations; bilingual competency a plus; computer literacy with standard word processing, spreadsheet programs, email, and web browsers. Compensation Compensation range: $34.81–$43.26 per hour.
