Medical Technician (Phlebotomist)

Location: Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC), Togus, Maine Position Type: Full-Time Contract (4 FTE Positions) Contract Duration: Five (5) Year Federal Contract Opportunity

Position Summary

The Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC) in Togus, Maine is seeking four (4) qualified Medical Technicians (Phlebotomists) to provide onsite laboratory support services to eligible Veteran patients. The Medical Technician will perform phlebotomy, specimen processing, and laboratory support activities in accordance with Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) guidelines and VA policies, ensuring the highest standards of patient care, safety, and professionalism.

Available Shifts

· 2 Full-Time Day Shift Positions: 9:00 AM – 5:30 PM

· 2 Full-Time Evening Shift Positions: 3:00 PM – 11:30 PM

· All positions require rotating weekends and holidays.

Weekend Schedules:

· Day Shift Weekend: 6:00 AM – 2:00 PM

· Evening Shift Weekend: 1:30 PM – 9:00 PM

Employees scheduled to work weekends will receive designated weekdays off before and after the weekend assignment in accordance with VA scheduling requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

· Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collection procedures for:

o Inpatient and outpatient services

o Emergency Department patients

o STAT, ASAP, and timed collections

o Inpatient ward rounds

· Perform specimen processing, labeling, preparation, and send-out testing procedures.

· Positively identify patients and specimens prior to collection and processing.

· Document and resolve collection, processing, testing, and reporting issues.

· Maintain strict confidentiality and safeguard electronic and paper patient information.

· Support quality control activities and adhere to all laboratory safety protocols.

· Provide professional, patient-centered customer service to Veterans, families, and staff.

· Work in multiple laboratory areas as needed to support operational requirements.

Qualifications

· High school diploma or equivalent required; completion of an accredited Phlebotomy Technician program preferred.

· National phlebotomy certification preferred (ASCP, AMT, NHA, or equivalent).

· Minimum of one (1) year of recent phlebotomy experience in a hospital, clinic, or laboratory setting preferred.

· Experience performing difficult draws, timed collections, and specimen processing.

· Knowledge of laboratory safety procedures and CLSI standards.

· Strong communication skills and ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary healthcare team.

Work Requirements

· Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime as required by patient care needs.

· On-call and standby duties are not required.

· Must maintain professionalism and provide services that meet or exceed nationally recognized laboratory standards and VA expectations for quality patient care.
