TEACHER: SPECIAL EDUCATION

JOB DESCRIPTION

POSITION TITLE: Teacher: Special Education

SUPERVISES: Directly supervises students assigned to his/her classes. Indirectly supervises all students.


JOB GOAL: To help students learn concepts and skills that will contribute to their development as mature, functional responsible members of society.

QUALIFICATIONS:


1. Alabama teaching certificate in the area of instructional exceptionality.


2. Valid driver's license is preferred.

REPORTS TO: School Principal with technical supervision by Coordinator of Special Education


SALARY: To be determined commensurate with local salary matrix, credentials, and experience.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  1. Administer educational achievement tests to assess students' levels of competencies and needs.
  2. Assess students' needs in transition and related services.
  3. Schedule annual IEP meetings.
  4. Coordinate and assist in the development of an IEP designed to meet related services, educational and transitional needs of the student through the establishment of goals, objectives and timelines.
  5. Employ a variety of instructional techniques consistent with the individual needs and capabilities of the students.
  6. Monitor student participation in regular education programs, by remediation materials upon request.
  7. Actively participates in Eligibility and Level One Due Process IEP meetings and complete form relevant to input on students discussed at the meetings.
  8. Evaluate the educational program and student progress according to the IEP.
  9. Attend workshops, conferences and/or conventions related to special education services to maintain growth in professional development and meet state certification guidelines.
  10. Maintain appropriate records according to guidelines and submit reports as required.
  11. Establish and maintain a standard of student behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
  12. Maintain open lines of communication with students, support agencies, and their parents concerning both the broad academic and behavioral progress of students.
  13. Cooperate with other members of the staff in planning instructional goals, objectives, methods and the development of curriculum.
  14. Assume other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate supervisor.
  15. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers who have LD students in regular classes, interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students to the entire staff, and assisting the student with regular class assignments.
  16. Assist other professional staff members in resolving the unique social, psychological, or disciplinary problems of each student.
  17. Maintain IEP records, attendance records, and all other required records pertinent to the LD program for local, state, and federal reporting.
  18. Evaluate, select, requisition books, instructional aids, equipment, instructional supplies and maintain required inventory records.
  19. Develop and maintain a classroom environment conducive to effective learning within the limits of the resources provided by the district.
  20. Employ instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting stated objectives.
  21. Make provision for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside the instructional environment when required or requested to do so under reasonable circumstances.
  22. Attend and participate in faculty and other meetings as scheduled by administration.
  23. Sponsor student extracurricular organizations as requested.
  24. Provide for his/her own professional growth through an ongoing program of reading, workshops, seminars, conferences, and/or advanced coursework at institutions of higher learning. Meet at least minimum school district requirements for the annual number of inservice hours.
  25. Perform such other duties and assume such other responsibilities as may be assigned by the supervisor or Superintendent.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  1. Demonstrate knowledge of student behavior in his/her area of exceptionality as well as policies and procedures relevant to program implementation and participation.
  2. Knowledge to interpret assessment data, group students and develop methodologies and strategies conducive to individualized instructional needs.
  3. Effective skills in oral and written communication to fulfill IEP requirements and communicate to students, parents, support agencies and other faculty and staff.
  4. Physical and emotional ability and dexterity to perform required work and move about as needed in a fast-paced, high-intensive work environment.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional programs; ability to plan and implement lessons based on division and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, and parents and community; ability to speak clear and concisely in written or oral communication.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. The employee is frequently required to interact with the public and other staff. The employee is directly responsible for the safety, well-being and work output of students.

Performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board's policy on Evaluation of Professional Personnel.
