Advanced Medical Support Assistant

Job Summary The Advanced Medical Support Assistant (AMSA) works collaboratively with members of expanded health‑care teams, including community care providers, pharmacists, social workers, dieticians, and behavioral health staff. The role focuses on scheduling, patient coordination, and administrative support to facilitate access to care. Basic Requirements United States Citizenship (non‑citizens may be appointed only when no qualified citizens can be recruited in accordance with VA policy). High‑school diploma or equivalent GED certification; or a proficiency certificate issued by a State or territorial board or department of education. English language proficiency in spoken and written form, in accordance with 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). Qualifications One year of experience equivalent to the GS‑5 level in scheduling patients for treatment, conducting appointments, referring patients to specialty clinics, resolving complaints, interacting with internal and external customers, reviewing electronic health records, verifying insurance, coordinating care actions, and scheduling appointments in accordance with guidelines. Ability to collaborate and communicate with a diverse range of medical clinicians across multiple disciplines (e.g., physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, pharmacists, nursing staff) to achieve team goals. Ability to set priorities, organize work to meet deadlines, and ensure compliance with established processes, policies, and regulations. Effective communication skills—both electronically and verbally—across multiple mediums and in writing. Advanced knowledge of technical health‑care processes (scheduling, interdisciplinary coordinated care, community models, patient‑care portals) and related policies and procedures. Advanced knowledge of medical terminology and related administrative functions (appointment cycles, referral follow‑up, overbooking, provider availability). Responsibilities Adhere to scheduling policies and procedures; conduct audits, studies, and surveys to develop procedures. Ensure appointments are made according to provider orders and coordinate administrative services for veterans, family members, caregivers, and the general public. Manage patient check‑in and check‑out processes, including documentation, insurance information collection, and revenue‑collection support. Utilize report data to assist in care‑delivery processes. Resolve difficult problems and diffuse patient dissatisfaction with VA services. Perform VHIC card processing, genuinely assist with BeneTravel requests, manage Heritage Medication Program procedures, and coordinate postage and UPS label preparation. Maintain consistent full‑time work schedule; detailed scheduling to be determined upon selection. Compensation and Benefits GS‑6 grade; competitive salary with potential for higher step rates based on qualifications or special needs. Paid time off: 13–26 days annual leave, 13 days sick leave, 11 paid federal holidays; additional leave accrual credit may apply. Parental leave: up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment for birth, adoption, or foster‑care placement. Child‑care subsidy: up to 25% of eligible costs for full‑time employees with total family income below $144,000, up to a monthly maximum of $416.66. Retirement: federal pension (5‑year vesting) and 401(k) with up to 5% employer contribution. Federal health, vision, dental, term life, and long‑term care insurance; many programs transferable into retirement. Position is not remote, telework, or virtual.
