Police Officer – Lateral (In State) The City of Sugar Land invites experienced law enforcement professionals to apply for a full‑time position as a Police Officer – Lateral (In State). The role requires that applicants have at least three years of sworn peace‑officer service in Texas and meet the qualifications listed below. The Sugar Land Police Department is CALEA accredited, staffed by 180 sworn officers, and offers opportunities for specialized assignments and training. Compensation and Benefits Starting Salary: $85,072 (dependent on experience and qualifications) Sign‑on Bonus: $10,000 Annual salary increases up to $105,685 in Step 10 Pay for Performance Awards up to $4,000 per year Education Incentives: $600 per year for an Associate’s Degree, $1,200 for a Bachelor’s, $1,800 for a Master’s TCOLE Certificates Incentives: $600 for Intermediate, $1,200 for Advanced, $1,800 for Master Field Training Officer / Field Training Coordinator Incentives: $1,500 / $3,000 per year SWAT or Crisis Negotiator Assignment Incentive: $1,500 per year Longevity Pay: $4 per month (up to $1,200 per year) after 13 months of employment Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS) – 7% contribution with 2:1 match by the City City‑subsidized Medical and Dental Insurance with multiple plan options City‑paid Basic Life Insurance at 1× your annual salary Long‑term Disability Insurance Voluntary Vision, Supplemental Life Coverage, and Aflac indemnity plans including Accident, Cancer, Hospitalization, and Critical Illness Short‑Term Disability and prepaid legal benefits through Legal Shield 13 paid holidays Paid vacation starting at 80 hours per year (up to 160 hours at 11 years) Paid sick leave accrual of 3.69 hours per pay period Paid parental leave up to 6 weeks Fitness Incentive Program (up to 80 hours paid leave annually) On‑site wellness facilities and programming Mental health benefits and resources, including a robust Employee Assistance Program (EAP) Uniforms, weapons, and equipment provided Typical Qualifications At least three years of sworn peace‑officer service in Texas with one agency, most recently served. Experience regularly answering 911 calls and having duties comparable to an officer in the Sugar Land Police Department, including powers of arrest, in either the Patrol or Investigations Bureau. Not having performed a role in communications, detention, or courtrooms. Reserve police officer or unpaid status does not count toward the three‑year requirement. US Citizen with a valid driver’s license and a good driving record. Stable employment record with no history of conduct that could affect suitability for law enforcement. Non‑smoker preferred. Pass a physical fitness test, oral interview board, polygraph test, and a thorough background investigation. Chief of Police may exercise final discretion on eligibility; this decision is final and non‑appealable. Recruitment and Selection Process Step 1 – Application: Complete the online application found on the City of Sugar Land website during the specified period. Step 2 – Testing: Pass a physical assessment (50% of the Texas DPS 2000‑meter row standard) and an interview panel consisting of job‑knowledge and situational questions. Step 3 – Oral Review Board: Undergo an in‑depth interview covering applicant knowledge and situational reasoning. Step 4 – Background Packet Submission: Submit a personal history statement for background investigation. Step 5 – Polygraph Examination: Complete a polygraph test for eligible candidates. Final Steps – Eligibility Pool and Conditional Job Offer: Successful candidates are placed in an eligibility pool; conditional job offers may be made by the Chief of Police, followed by medical and psychological examinations before a final offer is issued.
