Job Summary: The Physician provides licensed medical care including diagnosis, treatment (inclusive of surgery or pre/post-surgical care where appropriate), case management and clinical research. The Physician manages complex and sometimes unpredictable situations. The Physician must be competent in technical, clinical and surgical skills (where appropriate), cognitive and interpersonal skills required to serve those patients receiving the above mentioned services. The Physician is expected to practice within the established Medical Center and physician’s standards of practice (policies, procedures, protocols), and adhere to key results areas of the Medical Center. Required Qualifications: Medical Doctor (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), board certified or board eligible in specialization required. State of Ohio and DEA licensure required. Completion of an accredited residency in specialty required and a fellowship training program in sub-specialty required (where applicable).
The Ohio State University College of Medicine and the Wexner Medical Center seek a Transplant Hepatologist at the Associate Professor to Professor level to join the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition. Academic rank track commensurate with academic record and experience.
Position Overview
The Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology & Nutrition is seeking a highly accomplished clinical and academic leader in hepatology to join our growing program within a high-volume liver transplant center.
This role is designed for a mid-career physician (minimum 5 years post-training) with demonstrated national prominence and a strong commitment to clinical excellence, research, and program development. The ideal candidate will contribute to advancing hepatology services and strengthening our national reputation in liver disease and transplantation.

Under the visionary leadership of Division Director Georgios Papachristou, MD, PhD, the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition has experienced significant growth and expansion. Today, the Division includes 44 gastroenterologists, 20 advanced practice providers (APPs), and 3 PhD research faculty, representing a diverse group of nationally and internationally recognized experts across the full spectrum of gastroenterology and hepatology subspecialties.
This growth has enabled us to expand access to highly specialized clinical services and meet the increasing healthcare needs of the rapidly growing Columbus region and beyond. Our faculty are dedicated to providing outstanding patient-centered care while driving innovation through cutting-edge clinical, translational, and basic science research.
With more than $6 million in annual research funding from federal agencies, foundations, and industry partners, the Division continues to advance discoveries that improve the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases. Our investigators collaborate across disciplines to translate scientific breakthroughs into meaningful improvements in patient outcomes.
The Division is equally committed to excellence in education. Our ACGME-accredited Gastroenterology Fellowship Program continues to grow and currently includes six trainees, providing a rigorous and comprehensive training experience. Fellows benefit from exceptional mentorship, diverse clinical exposure, and abundant research opportunities, preparing them to become future leaders in academic and clinical gastroenterology.

Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide exceptional patient care in hepatology and liver transplantation across inpatient and outpatient settings
- Participate in and help lead a multidisciplinary transplant program within a high-volume academic medical center
- Perform and oversee management of complex liver disease, including cirrhosis, transplant evaluation, and post-transplant care
- Lead and collaborate on clinical and translational research initiatives
- Maintain and expand a funded research portfolio (NIH, foundation, or industry-supported)
- Mentor fellows, residents, medical students, and junior faculty
- Participate in multidisciplinary case conferences and tumor boards
- Contribute to program development, quality improvement, and innovation in hepatology care delivery
- Assume leadership responsibilities within the hepatology or transplant program (formal or emerging leadership roles)
- Engage in regional and national activities that enhance the division’s academic mission
Requirements
- MD or DO degree
- Board Certification in Gastroenterology
- Board Certification in Transplant Hepatology
- Completion of accredited residency and fellowship training
- Minimum of 5 years of clinical experience post-training
- Prior experience practicing in a high-volume liver transplant center
- Demonstrated record of peer-reviewed publications Evidence of extramural funding in clinical and/or translational research
- Academic accomplishments consistent with Associate Professor rank
Preferred Qualifications
- Established or emerging national reputation in hepatology or transplant medicine
- Prior leadership experience (e.g., medical director, program lead, section leadership, or committee leadership)
- Proven success in developing or growing clinical programs
- Experience in multicenter trials, clinical trials leadership, or translational science initiatives
- Expertise in areas such as advanced liver disease, MASLD, viral hepatitis, liver cancer, or transplant outcomes
- Demonstrated commitment to education, mentorship, and faculty development
- Strong track record of collaboration across multidisciplinary teams
Faculty Defined
Clinical faculty (regardless of rank)- Persons with titles of assistant professor-clinical, associate professor-clinical and professor-clinical. These faculty will have earned a Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO), doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field. Clinical faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of three to five years. They may be reappointed to successive terms. Their principal career focus is the delivery of exemplary clinical care, and may include teaching, and/or research.
Tenure-Track faculty (regardless of rank)- Persons with the titles of assistant professor, associate professor, or professor who are eligible for tenure and who have obtained tenure. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD), Doctor of Medicine (MD), Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Their primary career focus centers on research, service, and teaching. Tenure-track faculty with MD, DO or MD/PhD degrees may also be involved in clinical care.
Research Faculty (regardless of rank)- Persons with the titles of research assistant professor, research associate professor, or research professor. These faculty will have earned a doctorate (PhD) or other terminal degree in the relevant field of study. Research faculty members are not eligible for tenure and are appointed for terms of one to five years. Their principal career focus is research.
