About the Role:

Client is seeking an experienced Senior Associate Attorney with significant Virginia criminal trial experience, including jury trials and litigation involving expert witnesses. You will independently manage criminal defense matters and related civil proceedings, mentor less experienced attorneys and support staff, and contribute to our growing practice.

This role offers substantial autonomy within a collaborative team. We are looking for a confident, adaptable litigator who combines skilled advocacy with exceptional client management, empathetic communication, and a strong commitment to teamwork.

Key Responsibilities:

Criminal Defense Litigation and Case Management

• Independently manage cases from assignment through final disposition in Virginia's Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Courts, General District Courts, and Circuit Courts.

• Develop case strategies, evaluate evidence and defenses, negotiate with prosecutors, and litigate motions, evidentiary hearings, bench trials, and jury trials.

• Identify, retain, and prepare expert witnesses; evaluate expert evidence; and conduct direct and cross-examinations as appropriate.

• Handle the full range of criminal matters accepted by the firm unless exceptions are approved in advance by the firm owner, plus assigned related civil proceedings, including expungements and matters arising from animal cruelty allegations.

• Maintain organized files, meet deadlines, research unfamiliar matters, stay current on Virginia law and procedure, and adapt to local court practices in new jurisdictions.

Client Communication and Team Leadership:

• Manage client relationships with proactive updates, timely responses, clear explanations of options and next steps, and realistic expectations about outcomes and timelines.

• Build trust through honesty, preparation, empathy, and follow-through; navigate difficult conversations with patience, professionalism, and appropriate boundaries.

• Mentor less experienced attorneys in case strategy, courtroom preparation, research, and client management. Attend and actively contribute to mandatory weekly case rounds, developing the ability to lead them.

• Collaborate with attorneys and support staff, delegate with clear expectations, review delegated work for quality, and improve workflows and case preparation.

Professional and Firm Development:

• Continue developing legal skills, embrace unfamiliar case types and changes in firm technology and operations, and share knowledge or seek assistance when needed.

• Collaborate with the firm owner on marketing and business development, providing legal insights and content guidance to marketing vendors and contributing ideas that strengthen the firm's visibility and services.

Required Qualifications:

• Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school and active Virginia State Bar membership in good standing.

• Substantial criminal defense litigation experience, including significant trial experience in Virginia General District and Circuit Courts and experience handling juvenile and domestic relations matters.

• Jury trial experience: Preparing and conducting jury trials, including jury selection, opening statements, witness examinations, evidence presentation, closing arguments, and trial strategy.

• Expert witness experience: Identifying, retaining, and preparing experts; evaluating reports and opinions; and examining or cross-examining expert witnesses at trial.

• Ability to independently manage a criminal caseload, with strong knowledge of Virginia criminal law, procedure, and evidence, and excellent research, writing, analytical, negotiation, and advocacy skills.

• Exceptional client communication, sound judgment in emotionally challenging situations, strong organization and attention to detail, and the ability to manage competing priorities.

• Willingness and ability to mentor colleagues, collaborate with support staff, travel regularly throughout the service area, and uphold the firm's mission and core values.

• Willingness and ability to handle related civil proceedings, including expungements and animal cruelty matters. Prior experience is beneficial but not required if you are willing to research applicable law and procedures and provide competent representation.
