• Pay Rate: $17.20$21.10 / Hour (USD)
• Shift / Schedule: TuesdaySaturday, 6:00 AM 2:30 PM CST
• Overtime: Overtime availability is a requirement

Job Summary

The Specimen Technician (SPT I) is responsible for general support functions within the Specimen Processing Department. This position requires a data entry background. Functions performed may include but are not limited to A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory, imaging/microfilming, centrifugation and aliquoting. All functions must be performed with confidence, accuracy and in a timely manner. The job is complex and requires that the employee have good organization skills and is able to learn and understand specimen types related to test(s) ordered by the client. The SPT I must have the ability to learn and understand the compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change on a daily basis. This position is critical to quality for customer satisfaction. Additionally, since many changes do occur from day to day, great flexibility on the part of the SPT I is required. The SPT I will be exposed to many different demands made by the customer. The majority of SPT I work on the night shift, but based on staffing needs, weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime availability is a requirement.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform A-station, presort, pickup and delivery of processed specimens to the laboratory
• Perform imaging/microfilming, centrifugation, and aliquoting
• Complete all functions with confidence, accuracy, and in a timely manner
• Learn and understand specimen types related to test(s) ordered by the client
• Learn and understand compliance regulations related to test ordering, which may change on a daily basis
• Communicate effectively with all levels of staff
• Adhere to core values, safety, and compliance policies and procedures
• Keep work area neat and clean
• Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills that foster a positive environment
• Demonstrate flexibility and ability to adapt to change

Required Skills

• Data entry background with the ability to enter 6,000 alphanumeric keystrokes per hour

Preferred Skills

• Knowledge of laboratory testing and/or laboratory specimen processing
• Medical background including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
• Previous laboratory experience
• Previous hospital laboratory experience
• Previous experience in a production environment

Education Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent (required)

• Previous laboratory experience preferred
• Previous hospital laboratory experience (a plus, but not required)
• Medical background preferred, including medical terminology applicable to a clinical laboratory
• Previous experience in a production environment preferred

Work Environment / Physical Requirements

• Works in a biohazard environment; must practice good safety habits at all times
• Must be able to sit or stand for long periods
• Department is a production environment with emphasis on productivity/quality standards and departmental completion times
• Weekend, holiday, on-call, and overtime availability is a requirement based on staffing needs
• Majority of SPT I positions work the night shift
