Clinical Pharmacy Specialist - ED - ICU

About the Role The Clinical Pharmacy Specialist will serve within their area as the representative of pharmacy in all aspects of the care the pharmacy department provides. They will be responsible for reviewing pharmacy and organizational policies and procedures related to drug use, ensuring departmental readiness for regulatory audits within and outside their specialty area. The role includes oversight of formulary management, development of guidelines and protocols, drug‑related education, and close collaboration with other hospital departments to evaluate, direct, and modify pharmacy services. The specialist will assist in training clinical staff and learners, competency assessments, and oversight of other pharmacy team members on the unit when applicable. Academic scholarship is expected, including authorship, presentations, and attendance at national meetings, and the specialist will help create and execute collaborative practice opportunities at Children’s National. Department & Compensation Department: 10314 Pharmacy Services Pay Range: $116,646.40 – $194,417.60 Sign‑on bonus: $20,000 Variable shift Qualifications Minimum Education: Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) Minimum Work Experience: At least 1 year of pharmacy experience in a pediatric, specialized, or academic/clinical setting. 6 years required for candidates without a PGY2 residency. Required Licenses and Certifications: Eligible for licensure in the District of Columbia and, as applicable, Maryland and Virginia; Board Certified Pharmacist (BPS) specialization within 1 year. Functional Accountabilities Order Processing and Accreditation Readiness Interpret medication orders, profile orders, and oversee packaging, labeling, and distribution of medications. Input orders into the pharmacy computer system when appropriate. Staff the pharmacy operation to maintain distribution skillset. Assist in performing unit inspections and verifying accreditation readiness. Review medication lists for therapeutic duplication, omissions, dosing errors, drug interactions, and allergies. Verify new medication orders for appropriate drug, dose, route, and frequency. Assist nursing staff and other providers with automated dispensing machine questions. Interventions / Documentation Perform drug therapy monitoring and intervene as necessary on dosing, administration, interactions, side‑effects, and monitoring issues. Complete therapeutic drug monitoring consults and adverse reaction reports. Document interventions and drug information in the patient chart when applicable and appropriate. Collaborate with the multidisciplinary team to ensure appropriate medication access, recommending alternative therapies as needed. Participate actively in medication reconciliation to ensure a complete and accurate home medication list. Work collaboratively with providers to implement and communicate comprehensive medication evaluation and management across care settings. Staff Development and Training Assist with the education, training, and supervision of pharmacy students, residents, and new pharmacists. Provide lectures and drug reviews to professional groups and committees. Develop system changes, educational programs, and interventions that reduce errors in practice, including prescribing, dispensing, and administration errors. Clinical Services Assure appropriate medication use throughout the organization. Identify drugs/therapies for further evaluation and formulary addition. Provide accurate and timely drug information to physicians, nurses, and other health professionals. Maintain an evidence‑based clinical practice. Serve as a clinical specialist resource, addressing system and patient care issues. Assist with drug shortage management. Represent the department on key committees. Assist pharmacy operations and informatics teams in implementing and updating formulary items. Help design and execute collaborative practice agreements. Quality Improvement Lead cost‑saving initiatives within the department. Lead and participate in quality improvement initiatives internally and externally. Contribute to order set development, including electronic order set builds. Assist in growing clinical pharmacy programs across the organization. Participate in performance, quality improvement, and patient safety activities for service area, pharmacy services, and the enterprise. Identify high‑cost, high‑use agents and engage in cost‑management initiatives. Professional Development Participate in or lead research initiatives with medical units and/or resident projects. Attend, present, or moderate at subject‑area conferences. Engage in preceptor development seminars, teaching in the children’s preceptor development series, and completing preceptor development CE’s. Contribute to primary literature through publications and poster presentations.
