Industrial Utilities Technician

General Mills Industrial Utilities Technician – Geneva, IL As part of our manufacturing group, you will perform preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, mechanical and electrical repairs, and other tasks to keep refrigeration systems, utility plant machinery and equipment—including electrical, condensate/steam, fire protection, potable/domestic water, and sewer—in operational condition to meet production, refrigeration, storage, and shipping needs. Responsibilities Manage, operate, and maintain building utilities and support equipment, including ammonia refrigeration, boilers, steam, air compressors, fire systems, building plumbing, electrical, and HPHW systems. Schedule and perform routine preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs to ensure plant and equipment efficiency. Conduct daily checks of the ammonia system and provide technical support for equipment troubleshooting and modifications. Follow and participate in Process Safety Management (PSM) and Root Cause Analysis (Why, Why) activities. Assist with continuous improvement initiatives and train new employees as needed. Shift Hours 12‑hour rotating shifts (day: 5:30 am–6:00 pm; night: 5:30 pm–6:00 am). Shift schedule: 2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off (rotating, with each block shifting from day to night). Ability and willingness to work overtime, any shift—including days, nights, weekends, holidays, and emergency events. Plant operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Pay $39.70 per hour up to $44.59 per hour depending on skillset and experience. Tech I: $39.70 per hour; Tech II: $44.59 per hour; Tech III: $50.13 per hour (internal advancement opportunity). Rates include $2.00 per hour for shift differential. What You Have to Offer High school diploma or GED. Proficient in English. Minimum 1 year of experience with industrial ammonia refrigeration systems. Minimum 1 year of experience with boilers and low‑pressure steam. Experience with mechanical utilities systems (compressed air, vacuum, hydraulics). Experience with process water distribution, wastewater handling, and treatment. Knowledge of industrial, mechanical, and electrical technologies. Experience with State and Federal EPA permits/compliance and/or PSM/ARM program compliance. Operator (CARO/CIRO) certification preferred. Incident command and/or HAZWOPER program experience preferred. Experience in a manufacturing/production environment preferred. Project management experience, including construction management. Physical Requirements Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Must be able to perform physical tasks for extended periods, including standing, walking, climbing, bending, pushing, pulling, and twisting. Ability to climb and/or work at heights using stairs, ladders, lifts, or platforms. Ability to wear protective clothing and equipment (safety shoes, face masks, safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, hair/beard net, gloves) when required. Willingness and ability to adhere to grooming requirements for a food manufacturing environment. Ability to work in hot, cold, noisy, dusty, wet conditions.
