Division Supervisor – Water Supply (Engineering & Public Works) The Village of Schaumburg seeks a knowledgeable and experienced Division Supervisor – Water Supply to lead critical operations within the water production and distribution systems. This role involves overseeing skilled technical work requiring specialized training, ensuring the safe, reliable, and compliant delivery of water services to the community, developing staff, and contributing to long‑term planning and efficiency of the Village’s water supply operations. Job Summary This position reports to the Superintendent – Utility Services and requires special training, education, and experience. Responsibilities include performing repairs and adjustments on the water production and distribution system, operating and maintaining lift and pumping stations, supervising chemical tests and water quality sampling, managing SCADA systems, and ensuring compliance with IEPA regulations. The supervisor also trains employees, assists with the snow and ice control program, develops work schedules, handles emergency conditions, and manages the division’s budget and projections. Job Duties Supervise and manage the Water Division comprising heavy equipment operators, maintenance workers, and water technicians. Develop a schedule of daily, weekly, and monthly work activities; report on accomplishments; verify crew progress; and resolve employee issues. Participate directly in construction activities and operate all equipment within the department. Anticipate potential problems and keep the Superintendent – Utility Services, Assistant Director, and Director informed. Receive and respond to service requests from internal and external customers, often engaging face‑to‑face with the public. Create an environment that encourages innovation; coordinate a training schedule for subordinates. Establish and communicate clear performance standards; evaluate job performance; and manage disciplinary actions. Act as Duty Division Supervisor in a weekly rotation; serve as first point of contact during after‑hours emergencies such as building alarms, water main breaks, sewer backups, or street light knockdowns. Use data and quantitative measurements to assess outcomes, propose solutions, track quality, and enable improvement. Perform snow and ice control functions and support emergency operations, including floods and severe weather events. Provide input on divisional budgets; prepare justification forms; track accounts and procurement card usage. Set clear written goals and objectives for the unit; communicate organizational priorities; evaluate accomplishments. Supervise water system operation to maintain adequate supply; conduct SCADA monitoring during night and weekend shifts. Manage contractual programs such as meter testing, valve exercising, leak surveys, and backflow database maintenance. Perform additional duties as assigned. Qualifications Associate’s degree or equivalent credit hours toward a bachelor’s degree with major coursework in business management, engineering, or a related field. Minimum of three years of experience in a Public Works Department with skilled maintenance and construction knowledge. Minimum of one year of supervisory experience coordinating staff activities. Valid full Class C IEPA Water Operator’s License or ability to obtain within eighteen months. Valid State of Illinois Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or ability to obtain within six months. Proficiency with current computer technology, job‑specific software, and customer service systems. Working Conditions / Physical Requirements Subject to elevated levels of noise for extended periods. Subject to extreme temperatures for prolonged periods or abrupt changes. Subject to fumes or disagreeable odors. Subject to inclement weather conditions. Subject to extended periods of isolation. Subject to working in wet, dirty, dusty, hot, humid, or cold conditions in high vehicle traffic areas. Required physical strength to lift and move 75 pounds frequently. Frequent bending, stooping, standing, pulling, pushing, or reaching. Prolonged concentration tasks such as reading blueprints. Frequent public interaction requiring effective verbal and written communication. Occasional work at heights of 130 feet above or depths of 50 feet below the ground. Required ability to supervise private contractors. Extended work periods up to 12 hours normally and 18 hours infrequently for several consecutive days. Benefits & Compensation Starting pay rate: $46.06–$56.43 per hour for a 40‑hour workweek; salary range $46.06–$66.79 based on qualifications.
