In This Role, You Will:
  • Protect life and property, enforce state and local laws, and respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.
  • Investigate crimes and incidents, collect and preserve evidence, document case facts, and conduct follow-up as needed.
  • Patrol assigned areas by vehicle or on foot to deter crime, identify hazards, and project the threat of apprehension.
  • Investigate traffic incidents, enforce parking and moving violations, and direct traffic when necessary.
  • Provide emergency aid and assistance, maintain peace during public gatherings and conflict situations, and support the public with a wide variety of service needs.
  • Prepare reports, participate in court proceedings, and present case evidence when required.
  • Build positive relationships with community members through problem-solving and community-oriented policing.
  • May have opportunities over time to serve in specialized assignments such as Criminal Investigations, Traffic Unit, School Resource Officer, Personnel & Training, Community Service, K-9 Handler, or specialized collateral assignments such as Field Training Officer, SWAT/CNT, CSI, EVOC Instructor, Peer Support, and others.

About the Police Department
The Pleasanton Police Department is committed to protecting life, preventing crime, and enhancing the quality of life in our community. The department is organized into three divisions. The Operations Division, the Investigations Division, and the Support Services Division. The Operations Division includes patrol, the Traffic Unit, and the Alternate Response Unit (ARU). The Investigation Division manages the Criminal Investigations Unit, Youth and Community Services, Personnel and Training, Special Enforcement Unit as well as our Community Outreach and social media. This division is also responsible for in-service training and certified courses to ensure compliance with Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) and applicable educational mandates for all sworn and civilian police personnel. The Support Services Division includes Dispatch, Records and is responsible for public records management.


The department also offers numerous collateral assignments including SWAT, K-9, Crime Scene Investigation (CSI), Crisis Negotiation Team (CNT), and many others.

Competitive Pay
  • Base Salary Range: $126,152 - $153,254 annually
  • Special Assignment Pay: Up to 5% (depending on assignment; not limited to one assignment)
  • POST Pay: Up to 7% (depending on certification: 5% for Intermediate and 7& for Advanced)
  • Holiday In-Lieu Pay: 7.5%
  • Education Incentive: up to 5% (depending on degree: 2.5% for AA, 5% for BA/BS/MA/MS)
  • Bilingual Pay: $100 per pay period
  • Longevity Pay: 2% at 8 years, 4% at 12 years, minimum 2 and 4 years with Pleasanton PD

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Qualified applicants must possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent. Prior experience in law enforcement and successful completion of some college course work in criminology, police sciences or a related field is desirable.

Age Requirement: Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

Certification: Must possess a Basic Certificate from P.O.S.T. at the time of appointment to Police Officer.

Vision/Hearing: 20/100 uncorrected vision in each eye, correctable to 20/30 or better. Must have normal color vision as established from an established color vision test, and no hearing loss over 25 db in the 500, 1000, 2000 frequency range. No loss over 45 db in the 3000 or 4000 range as revealed by standard auditory test.

License: Possession of, or ability to obtain a valid Class C California driver's license and proof of auto liability insurance is required.

Background Investigation: Satisfactory completion of a thorough background investigation. Must have not been convicted for a crime which could have resulted in state or federal imprisonment.

Pre-Employment Testing : Successful completion of drug screen, medical, psychological, and polygraph examinations.

Recruitment Process


This examination is open to candidates with one (1) year in a California law enforcement agency and possession of a current Basic California P.O.ST Certificate. If you have less than one year experience as a sworn police officer, please apply as a Police Officer - Academy Graduate.
  • One (1) year in a California law enforcement agency as defined in Penal Code 830.1 and 830.2, within the last thirty-six (36) months and possession of a current Basic California P.O.ST Certificate.
  • Out-of-state applicants with at least eight-teen (18) months as a full-time sworn Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff, and have passed a probationary period, will be required to obtain a valid POST Basic Course Waiver prior to appointment.
