Registered Nurse Cardiac Telemetry

Unit provides care for cardiac telemetry patients. The unit has 43 beds, including semi-private and private rooms. Average nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:5, with flexibility up to 1:6. Common diagnoses include post heart catheters, heart failure, COPD, and various arrhythmias. RNs are required to titrate certain medications, specifically Heparin and occasionally Lasix or Bumex. RNs will read cardiac strips, supported by monitor technicians. Charge nurses are available 24/7 and may assist with patient care based on unit needs. Patient Care Technicians (PCTs) typically have a goal ratio of 1:8, which can flex to 1:12-18 in accordance with staffing. Duties may include assisting with activities of daily living and performing EKGs. Occasional equipment such as CPAP and BiPAP will be used for supportive therapy. Shifts consist of 12-hour blocks, with self-scheduling options available. Travelers are expected to work every other weekend, while permanent staff follows a different schedule. Opportunities to float to other units exist but will only involve patients within the RN's skill set. Dress code includes royal blue scrubs, without hoodies or sweat jackets. Teamwork is emphasized, and support is available during busy periods with frequent admissions and discharges. New graduates are welcomed and will receive guidance on the unit.
