Registered Nurse - ICU

The Registered Nurse (RN) assesses, plans, implements, evaluates, and supervises individual patient care on a nursing unit/department according to unit policies and procedures. Provides supervision of non-RN personnel on the assigned unit. When assuming the charge role, delegates and supervises unit activities. May be required to work on other nursing units according to distribution of staff and patients. Performs other duties as assigned to maintain a high level of service. Responsibilities Assess the patient’s physical and psychosocial condition on an ongoing basis throughout the continuum of care. Develop, communicate, and document a plan of care reflecting individualized patient problems and interventions to achieve desired outcomes, involving the patient, family, and healthcare team. Implement and coordinate the plan of care in collaboration with the healthcare team. Evaluate the effectiveness of the plan of care, patient response to care, and readiness for discharge; revise the plan as needed and make referrals as indicated. Plan for education after assessing the patient’s and family’s learning needs and readiness; provide educational opportunities and document outcomes. Function as a preceptor to new staff and as a charge nurse. Meet performance expectations for customer service, teamwork, resource utilization, and staff and self-development as outlined in performance reviews. Perform other duties as assigned or directed to ensure smooth operation of the department/unit. Demonstrate competency in neuro patient care, including neuro assessment, airway management for neuro patients, and care for trached patients; participate in special neuro procedures. Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the TIA teaching program; perform pharyngeal, endotracheal, and tracheostomy suctioning according to policy and procedure. Demonstrate skill in the use of equipment and care of patients in a Halo brace and nursing responsibilities for patients on a ventilator. Qualifications Education: Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; BSN preferred. Proficient in use of computer software including electronic patient records. Must have ability to use the Internet for literature searches regarding care for patients. Experience: N/A Licensure: Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse license.
