This phlebotomist role focuses on performing high-quality blood draws and specimen collections in a fast-paced patient service environment, while supporting smooth workflow through accurate labeling, processing, and documentation. You will work with patients of all ages, clearly explaining procedures, following strict safety and regulatory standards, and collaborating with a team to ensure timely and reliable laboratory results.

Responsibilities

• Perform venipuncture and other specimen collections, including blood, urine, and fecal samples, using straight needles and butterfly needles as appropriate.
• Explain venipuncture and other collection procedures clearly and courteously to patients of all ages to ensure understanding and comfort.
• Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all test requisitions or computer labels against orders to ensure 100% accuracy.
• Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders and protocols.
• Collect, handle, and store specimens according to established procedures, including maintaining required temperatures and using appropriate collection containers and tubes.
• Package specimens for transport following established protocols to maintain specimen integrity.
• Update patient information accurately in the system and assist with recording maintenance data and decontamination activities as needed.
• Understand and fully interpret physicians’ orders to ensure correct specimen collection and processing.
• Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow all safety and infection control procedures at all times.
• Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.
• Answer telephone calls, provide laboratory results as appropriate, and respond to inquiries in a professional manner.
• Assist with troubleshooting workflow issues, participate in training activities, and make recommendations to improve efficiency and work processes.
• Perform daily blood draws in a high-volume setting, typically serving between 20 and 30 patients per day depending on patient flow.
• Collaborate with team members in the patient service center, focusing on blood draws during peak days while learning computer systems during less busy periods.

• Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, where required.
• Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.
• Demonstrated proficiency in performing venipuncture using straight needles and butterfly needles.
• Ability to collect, label, and process specimens accurately according to established procedures and test requirements.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.
• High school diploma or GED.
• 0–2 years of overall experience in a clinical, laboratory, or related healthcare setting.
• Ability to understand and follow physicians’ orders and laboratory protocols.
• Strong attention to detail to ensure accurate labeling, matching of requisitions, and proper specimen handling.
• Ability to comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and follow safety and infection control standards.
• Effective communication skills to explain procedures to patients and respond to inquiries professionally.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, high-volume environment with varying patient flow.

• Phlebotomy certificate and/or Medical Assistant certificate that includes venipuncture training.
• Experience working with patients of all ages, including pediatric through adult populations.
• Comfort working primarily on the busiest days, focusing heavily on blood draws.
• Ability to learn and use laboratory and patient information computer systems, with training provided during less busy times.
• Color vision sufficient to meet role requirements, supported by color vision screening.
• Willingness to participate in required occupational health screenings such as TB, MMR, and Hep-B evaluations, in accordance with organizational policies.
• Strong teamwork skills and the ability to collaborate in a patient service center environment.
• Flexibility to work at multiple locations within the designated area as scheduled.

This position is based in a patient service center and related outpatient locations, serving patients of all ages in a high-volume setting. The role is non-float and primarily focused on blood draws during the busiest days, with other team members handling most computer-based tasks during peak times. Initial training takes place at the same location where you will work, with additional training on computer systems scheduled when the patient flow is lighter. Typical scheduling includes weekday shifts such as Monday through Friday from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., with an additional two days for a total of four days per week, including a Saturday shift from around 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. In some locations, weekday shifts may run 8 hours, starting between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m. and ending between 3:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m., with a Saturday shift typically from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. You will work as part of a team rather than alone, in a structured clinical environment that follows strict safety, infection control, and regulatory standards. The work involves frequent standing, interacting directly with patients, and using standard phlebotomy equipment, centrifuges, and computer systems to support accurate specimen collection, processing, and transport.

This is a Contract position based out of Amityville, NY.

The pay range for this position is $21.00 - $21.00/hr.

This is a fully onsite position in Amityville,NY.
