The University of Washington Department of Medicine, Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases invites applications for up to three full-time (1.0 FTE) Global and Rural Health Fellow (Non-ACGME) positions for Internal Medicine physicians. Spots are available for the 20272028 academic year (July 1, 2027 start). Applications will be accepted through November 30, 2026. The University of Washington Global and Rural Health Fellowship is a one- or two-year post-residency training program for Internal Medicine physicians dedicated to improving health systems and addressing inequities in both global and rural settings. Fellows receive advanced training in clinical care, research, education, and leadership, with an emphasis on culturally responsive, community-centered care for underserved populations.
During the first year, fellows provide direct clinical care with Native communities at the Alaska Native Medical Center in Anchorage, Alaska, or with the Indian Health Service on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. In the second year, fellows select between two specialized tracks:
- Research Track: Fellows conduct clinical, implementation, or public health research through the University of Washington's international partnerships, focusing on health systems strengthening, monitoring and evaluation, and capacity building.
- Clinical Education Track: Fellows engage in clinical care, supervision, and medical education in low- and middle-income countries in collaboration with local health ministries and UW-affiliated faculty mentors.
Fellows participate in a four-week Global Health Leadership course in Seattle, attend regular virtual didactic sessions on global and rural health topics, and receive mentorship and career development support from UW faculty and global health partners such as Partners in Health, I-TECH, PATH, and Health Alliance International. Fellows are also expected to complete and present a scholarly project at a local, national, or international conference.
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Provide inpatient and outpatient clinical care in rural and international underserved settings.
- Conduct clinical, implementation, or public health research focused on global or rural health.
- Teach and supervise medical students and residents in clinical and academic settings.
- Participate in structured educational and leadership training, including the Global Health Leadership course and virtual seminars.
- Engage in mentorship and professional development with UW faculty and partners.
- Complete a scholarly project suitable for presentation at a professional conference.
The base salary range for this position will be $8,333.33 per month ($100,000 per year). This position is eligible for University of Washington benefits.

- Scholarly Work: Design and conduct clinical, implementation, or public health research projects focused on global or rural health issues OR collaborate with UW global partners on health systems strengthening, monitoring and evaluation, or capacity-building initiatives. Complete and present a scholarly project at a professional conference by the end of the fellowship.
