Speech Specialist

Panama-Buena Vista Union School District invites well-qualified candidates to apply for the position of Speech Specialist. The District is looking for a speech specialist who evaluates and treats school-aged children with verbal communications (speech and hearing) and cognitive disorders. Provides assessment, consultation, and in-service training to other caregivers and instructional support. The Speech Specialist is a professional position that requires specific training in speech and language therapy.

Major duties and responsibilities include using generally accepted tests and assessment techniques and procedures, diagnosing and treating the communicative abilities of students in areas such as articulation/phonology, cognition, motor speech, dysphasia, voice, fluency, craniofacial anomalies, hearing, and child and adult language. Works with multi-disciplinary teams to develop individual education plans based on assessments. Develops short and long range therapeutic goals and treatment programs to meet students' individual needs. Educates students and parents of the behaviors and activities that can characterize communicative disorders and develops exercises, learning and social experiences, and individual education plans to enhance communicative abilities. Integrates services with instructional technology and consistent with common core curriculum and methods to help students accomplish academic goals. Follows up with students who have been dismissed from special programs to evaluate academic and behavioral progress. Serves as a resource member on a student study team for one or more schools. Participates in multi-disciplinary staff conferences with school, county and community professionals. Educates school administrators, teachers, and support staff with speech/language and hearing pathology services and appropriate interventions. Plans and facilitates parent and teacher conferences that involve verbal and cognitive speech/language and hearing matters. Confers with parents and professional staff on a frequent and timely basis regarding each student's progress. Participates in the development and/or selection of materials that enhance learning and enhancement of communicative skills and abilities. Works and interacts with peers, as individuals and/or in team/group settings, in a professional manner that contributes to the District's academic achievement goals. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new developments in the profession, including methods that would serve education goals. Provides in-service demonstrations and assistance to other teachers and support staff on processes and techniques that reinforce speech and hearing therapies. Performs other duties as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

Other duties and responsibilities include attending professional conferences, workshops and advanced courses in communicative and allied professional fields. Reads current journals and literature in communications and allied professional fields. Reviews new materials and equipment. Actively participates in local, state and national professional speech and hearing organizations. Attends local meetings when requested and scheduled professional staff meetings. Speaks to professional, parent and community groups as requested.

Minimum qualifications include a bachelor's degree from a regionally-accredited college or university in Speech-Language Pathology, Communicative Disorder, or a closely aligned field or a valid California Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, Education Specialist Instruction Credential, or older equivalent credential. Verification of application efforts to Commission-approved SLP Services Credential program. Ability to relate positively to children and instill in them a desire to improve. Ability to relate positively to parents, school personnel and other lay and professional people. Ability to conduct oneself in a professional manner; present a favorable personal appearance; and demonstrate personality characteristics, which enhance effectiveness in a school setting. Ability to communicate effectively, with a pleasant voice and correct articulation; use appropriate, professional language skills in writing and speaking. Demonstrate positive attitude and desire to improve professional knowledge and competence.

Salary and terms of service include an annual salary range of $85,018 - $93,332 with 5 incremental steps, 184 working days per year, eight (8) hours per day. The District currently contributes up to $19,793.00 towards family, dental, medical, and vision insurance plans, along with a life insurance plan for the employee.
