Controller
Truckers Against Trafficking
Background:
Established in 2009, TAT began with a simple, yet powerful, belief: every truck driver can be a crucial ally in the fight against human trafficking. Today, TAT is an international, non-profit organization that educates, equips, empowers and mobilizes members of key industries and agencies to combat human trafficking. To accomplish its mission, TAT partners with the trucking, truck stop, motorcoach, transit, school transportation and energy industries, as well as law enforcement and government agencies throughout North America, to activate their workforces to prevent and disrupt human trafficking. To date, TAT has trained over 2.5 million people and established public and private sector partnerships in 50 U.S. states and eight Canadian provinces and territories. TAT works alongside industry leaders, who become force multipliers to spread awareness about human trafficking to their employees and within the communities in which they live and work.
Position Description:
TAT is seeking an experienced, mission-driven Controller to serve as the organization's senior finance executive and strategic partner to the Executive Director and Board of Directors. This individual will provide financial leadership, strengthen organizational systems, ensure regulatory compliance, and help position TAT for long-term growth and sustainability. The Controller will oversee all finance and accounting operations for TAT's $3+ million annual budget, including financial planning and analysis, budgeting, accounting, payroll, cash management, grant administration, audit coordination, internal controls, financial reporting, and investments. The Controller partners closely with the Executive Director on selected human resources and organizational operations.
Key responsibilities include:
- Finance and Accounting Leadership
- Provide strategic financial leadership and serve as the organization’s senior financial advisor to the Executive Director and Board of Directors, offering analysis, recommendations, and guidance to support organizational strategy, financial sustainability, and long-term planning.
- Oversee all accounting operations, financial systems, general ledger activity, and reporting processes to ensure compliance with GAAP nonprofit standards, grant requirements and all applicable federal and state regulations.
- Develop, strengthen, and monitor internal controls, financial policies, and fiscal safeguards to protect organizational assets, ensure accurate financial reporting, and support responsible stewardship of restricted and unrestricted funds.
- Lead the organization’s annual financial statement audit and related tax and compliance filings, including the preparation of schedules, coordination with external auditors, implementation of audit recommendations, and continuous improvement of financial processes.
- Prepare timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements, dashboards, and written management analyses for senior leadership and the Board. Explain key trends, budget variances, financial risks, opportunities, and recommended actions.
- Lead financial planning, annual budgeting, and organization-wide forecasting processes in partnership with leadership; monitor financial performance against approved budgets, identify and explain variances, and recommend corrective actions and resource allocation strategies as needed.
- Provide financial oversight of federal, foundation, and corporate grants, including budget development, financial reporting, compliance, cost allocation, reimbursement processes, and internal controls to mitigate financial and compliance risk.
- Monitor organizational financial risk and proactively identify opportunities to strengthen fiscal health, operational efficiency, and long-term financial resilience.
- Monitor investment performance; coordinate with external investment advisors; ensure compliance with Board-approved investment policies; recommend periodic portfolio rebalancing and reserve strategies.
- Oversee organizational cash flow, banking relationships, liquidity planning, reserve management, and short-term investment activities to ensure sufficient operating capital while maximizing returns consistent with Board-approved investment policies.
- Develop multi-year financial projections.
- Evaluate financial implications of strategic initiatives.
- Analyze program profitability/cost allocation.
- Recommend improvements to financial systems.
- Human Resources
- Develop and administer employee benefits programs (e.g., health insurance, retirement plans) and manage open enrollment.
- Analyze compensation strategies, salary bands, and pay equity, making appropriate recommendations to the Executive Director.
- Support the performance evaluation process and offer guidance to supervisors on goal setting and review conversations.
- Ensure the organization complies with all federal, state, and local labor laws and reporting requirements.
- Partner with leadership to review, update, and implement employee handbook policies and HR procedures to ensure compliance and organizational consistency.
- Advise management on corrective actions and ensure disciplinary policies are applied fairly and lawfully.
- Partner with the Executive Director and hiring managers on recruitment activities, including writing job descriptions, position postings, candidate screening, compensation review, onboarding, benefits enrollment, and employment administration.
- Risk Management
- Oversee organizational insurance program including annual coverage reviews.
- Coordinate renewals.
- Recommend changes to coverage, limits, deductibles, and carriers.
- Coordinate claims as needed.
- Perform other duties that support TAT’s mission and organizational objectives.
Successful candidates will have:
- A strong dedication to combating human trafficking.
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required; CPA strongly preferred
- Seven or more years of accounting and finance experience.
- Demonstrated experience with nonprofit accounting, restricted revenue, grant compliance, and board-level financial reporting.
- Solid experience coordinating audit activities and managing reporting, budget development and analysis, accounts payable and receivable, general ledger, payroll, and accounting for investments
- A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants is essential
- Experience accounting for federal grants preferred.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to transform financial data into strategic recommendations for organizational leaders. Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills that allow for strategic data interpretation versus simple reporting.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present complex financial information clearly to executives, board members, auditors, funders, and non-financial staff.
- A desire to make this your full-time career (longevity preferred).
- Strong writing skills, including attention to detail.

- Adaptability and curiosity.
- High initiative, ability to self-start and work independently and effectively in a fully remote environment.
