Job Summary:
The Regional Director of Operations ("Director") is responsible for providing operational leadership, strategic support, and day-to-day oversight for a portfolio of specialty physician practices and ancillary service lines within an assigned within an assigned portfolio of partner practices. Reporting to the Regional Vice President of Operations, this leader partners closely with physician leaders, practice administrators, and corporate departments to drive operational excellence, financial performance, provider engagement, patient satisfaction, and sustainable growth.
The Director serves as the primary operational resource for assigned partner groups, providing hands-on leadership, coaching, and problem-solving while ensuring consistent execution of organizational initiatives, operational standards, and performance expectations. Working closely with local operational leadership, the Director identifies opportunities to improve efficiency, strengthen leadership, enhance the patient and provider experience, and support organizational growth.
As a key member of the operations team, the Director collaborates with Regional Vice Presidents, physician partners, practice leadership, and corporate departments to promote operational consistency, accountability, and successful execution across assigned markets.
Duties/Responsibilities:
Leadership & Regional Oversight
- Partner with the Regional Vice President of Operations to support operational performance, organizational objectives, and growth initiatives.
- Serve as the primary operational liaison for assigned physician practices and ancillary service lines.
- Conduct regular operational meetings with practice administrators and local leadership teams.
- Provide day-to-day coaching, mentoring, and support to practice leadership.
- Foster accountability by establishing clear expectations and following through on operational priorities.
Operational Leadership & Performance
- Support daily operations across assigned physician practices and ancillary service lines.
- Partner with local leadership to improve patient access, provider satisfaction, clinic efficiency, and financial performance.
- Assist practices with implementing corporate initiatives, operational standards, and best practices.
- Identify operational challenges and work collaboratively with local leadership to develop practical solutions.
- Promote consistency across assigned practices while recognizing local operational needs.
People & Culture
- Establish communications that promote USSM's culture, mission, and organizational vision.
- Partner with Human Resources and practice leadership to recruit, retain, develop, and engage high-performing team members at all levels.
- Coach, mentor, and support Practice Administrators and emerging operational leaders to strengthen leadership effectiveness and operational accountability.
- Support leadership development, succession planning, and onboarding initiatives for operational leaders across assigned practices.
- Build and maintain collaborative relationships with physicians, practice leadership, staff, vendors, business partners, and other key stakeholders.
Data-Driven Performance
- Monitor operational, financial, and clinical performance across assigned practices by analyzing key performance indicators (KPIs), identifying trends, and recommending strategies to improve operational effectiveness.
- Partner with practice leadership to develop, implement, and monitor action plans that address performance gaps and support continuous improvement.
- Promote data-driven decision-making by leveraging performance metrics, dashboards, and operational reporting to enhance efficiency, patient experience, and financial outcomes.
- Provide regular updates to the Chief Operating Officer and Regional Vice President of Operations regarding operational performance, improvement opportunities, emerging risks, and significant issues requiring executive attention.
- Escalate significant operational concerns to the Regional Vice President of Operations and collaborate on appropriate corrective actions.
Financial & Strategic Management
- Partner with practice leadership to achieve operational, financial, and growth objectives across assigned practices.
- Collaborate with Finance, Revenue Cycle, Human Resources, Information Technology, and other corporate departments to support operational performance, improve efficiency, and achieve budgetary goals.
- Support annual planning, budgeting, forecasting, and goal-setting processes for assigned practices and assist with monitoring financial performance throughout the year.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, optimize resource utilization, and enhance financial performance.
- Support operational due diligence, transition planning, and integration activities associated with acquisitions, new service lines, and strategic growth initiatives.
- Monitor capital expenditures, inventory, and operating expenses to promote fiscal responsibility and alignment with organizational objectives.
Compliance & Governance
- Foster collaboration among physicians, practice leadership, corporate departments, and key stakeholders to support operational alignment and effective decision-making.
- Ensure assigned practices operate in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local healthcare laws, regulations, company policies, and operational standards.
- Support quality improvement, risk management, patient safety, and regulatory readiness initiatives across assigned practices.
- Identify operational or compliance risks and partner with practice leadership and corporate resources to develop and implement corrective action plans.
- Perform other related duties as assigned by the Chief Operating Officer.
Business Intelligence
- Leverage business intelligence tools, dashboards, and operational reporting to transform data into actionable insights that support operational excellence and informed decision-making.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs), financial metrics, and clinical outcomes to identify trends, measure performance, and recommend opportunities for improvement across assigned practices.
- Partner with cross-functional teams to develop, enhance, and utilize reporting tools and dashboards that improve visibility, accountability, and operational performance.
- Promote a culture of data-driven decision-making by helping practice leaders understand and effectively use operational and financial performance metrics.
Organic Growth
- Partner with practice leadership to identify and implement opportunities that improve operational efficiency, expand existing service lines, and enhance the patient and provider experience.
- Support initiatives that increase patient access, improve clinic capacity, strengthen referral relationships, and drive sustainable growth across assigned practices.
- Collaborate with physicians, practice leadership, and corporate departments to evaluate and implement new services, operational improvements, and other strategic growth opportunities.
- Promote a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement that supports long-term operational success.
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Proven track record as an operations leader within the healthcare industry, preferably supporting physician practices and surgical specialties.
- Team-oriented leadership skills with the ability to coach, mentor, and develop high-performing teams.
- Unquestioned ethics, integrity, and sound judgment.
- Ability to effectively delegate responsibilities while maintaining accountability for operational outcomes.
- Experience leading multi-site, for-profit healthcare operations.
- Experience supporting the operational optimization, integration, and performance improvement of physician practices, providers, and ancillary service lines.
- Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with physician leaders, practice administrators, executive leadership, and corporate support teams.
- Proven ability to improve operational performance, standardize processes, and drive efficiency across multiple practice locations.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to leverage operational, financial, and performance metrics to drive decision-making and continuous improvement.
- Demonstrated competency in operational planning, execution, project management, and organizational development.
- Working knowledge of business functions including Marketing, Finance, Revenue Cycle, Information Technology, Human Resources, Purchasing, Contracting, and Development.
- Outstanding organizational, leadership, and customer service skills.
- Excellent interpersonal, relationship-building, and conflict resolution skills.
- Experience presenting operational and financial performance information to physician leaders, executive leadership, and other key stakeholders.
- Strong decision-making, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities.
- Cultural awareness and the ability to lead effectively within a complex, multi-site healthcare organization.
- Thorough understanding of applicable federal, state, and local healthcare laws, regulations, and operational standards.
- Ability to build strong partnerships and influence outcomes while balancing local practice needs with organizational objectives.
Education and Experience:
- Seven (7) or more years of progressive leadership experience in physician practice operations, ambulatory healthcare services, or healthcare management required.
- Direct experience leading multi-site physician practices and ancillary healthcare service lines required.
- Private practice, physician practice management (PPM), or management services organization (MSO) experience required.
- Experience within surgical specialties strongly preferred.
- Demonstrated success supporting multi-site healthcare organizations and partnering with physicians, practice administrators, and operational leaders to improve performance and operational excellence.
- Experience supporting practice integrations, operational transitions, organizational growth initiatives, and change management efforts preferred.
- Experience collaborating with executive and senior-level leadership to achieve organizational objectives required.
- Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Healthcare Administration, Management, Finance, or a related field required.
- Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA), Healthcare Administration (MHA), or a related field preferred.
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to travel approximately 50% or more, including regular visits to physician practices, ancillary service lines, and corporate offices, with overnight travel as business needs require.
- Ability to sit for extended periods and work at a computer, including participation in virtual meetings.
- Flexibility to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed to support operational priorities and respond to urgent business needs.
- Ability to function effectively in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions, competing priorities, and changing operational demands.
- Ability to occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.
