Attorney 1 Position: Attorney 1 – Entry Level Attorney with the West Virginia State Tax Division. Overview The West Virginia State Tax Division seeks an entry‑level attorney to provide legal advice, representation, and support on behalf of the agency. The role involves legal research, writing, and representation before the West Virginia Office of Tax Appeals and other agencies. Responsibilities Respond to taxpayer petitions for refund and reassessment and represent the agency before the Office of Tax Appeals. Research and prepare briefs, draft rulings, and present evidence before the tribunal. Provide written responses to other government agencies, professional organizations, and external entities on tax matters. Assist in drafting legislation, rules, and policies and review proposed legislation and rules. Perform related duties as required, including assistance with litigation and other complex matters. Minimum Qualifications Graduation from a regionally accredited or A.B.A. accredited law school. Member of the West Virginia State Bar or admission to the West Virginia State Bar within 12 months of hire. Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel intermittently. Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills. Additional Requirements Training will be provided; the attorney will initially work on technical matters and may progress to more complex cases as proficiency develops. Employment requires a fingerprint‑based criminal background check and a tax compliance check. Compensation and Benefits Salary range: $50,242 – $88,526 (market rate $78,617) Probation: 6‑month probationary period or until passing the West Virginia Bar, not to exceed 12 months.
