Executive Director

Greater Indiana Clean Cities, Inc.

Greater Indiana is an independent, standalone nonprofit focused on advancing communities with education and resources on alternative fuel vehicles. Our mission is to advance alternative, domestic fueled transportation, including energy-efficient technologies, across all sectors in Indiana. The 501(c)3 organization serves the entire state of Indiana, working with public and private sector members. Greater Indiana is a resource for members integrating alternative fuels, technologies, and efficiency measures. Greater Indiana hosts educational and networking events fostering partnership opportunities between fleets and industry providers.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Board President and Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides the support and management skills necessary to accomplish the goals set by Greater Indiana. The Director acts as the project manager for the organization’s efforts and coordinates various local events to best leverage resources, increase the number of alternative fuel vehicles on the road, and increase alternative fuel use. The Director develops and implements policies for achieving various long-range organizational goals. The Director builds consensus among organization members to move forward on such things as grant proposals, legislative agendas, technology evaluation, business development, public education, and infrastructure development. The Director works with state, county, and federal regulatory agencies, interest groups (such as environmental groups), media, consultants, and other organizations to help develop policies, coordinate work, exchange information, and represent members and the organization in public and private forums.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Executive Director Goals Lead and maintain all operations for the organization Implement the sustainability plan for the organization Attract and maintain an active membership of local stakeholders Team with local fleets to encourage a transition to AFVs, alternative fuel use, and other energy efficiency measures Establish and implement organization goals and action steps in line with the organization’s mission Conduct education and outreach primarily to fleets and the general public Primary Responsibilities Developing and/or implementing an organization-specific strategic program plan and work plan for accomplishing reasonable, well-supported goals Prioritizing organization activities and establishing timelines for implementation by establishing work groups to share the workload, building support for goals, and facilitating progress Motivating organization members to attend regular meetings and to participate in steering committees and working groups (Stakeholders may include city, county, state, and federal government fleets, private fleets, utility fleets, businesses, trade associations, non-profit organizations, and schools.) Researching grant opportunities, developing organization grant proposals, and administering grants Collaborating with relevant government agencies to help them understand how alternative fuel and energy-efficient transportation technology can help meet agency goals Evaluating applicability and implications of various federal, state, and local laws and other regulatory or policy activities on the organization’s current operations and future activities Representing the organization and communicating effectively in public and private forums, including national conferences, meetings, fundraisers, dedication ceremonies, and media events Educating the public to promote fuel-efficiency practices and influence current driver trends Meeting with representatives for state, county, and federal regulatory agencies, other divisions/departments, interest groups, consultants, the media, and other relevant parties to coordinate work and exchange information Facilitating communications among members Maintaining the organization's website as well as current stakeholder mail and e-mail distribution lists Organizing and facilitating meetings of committees and general membership, including establishing agendas, distributing materials in preparation of the meetings, and providing event logistics such as meeting location, audio/visual equipment, and refreshments Providing public education, facilitating member recruitment, and developing media contacts Developing materials such as brochures and public service announcements, and responding to public and media requests for information in a timely manner Supervising staff, interns, and consultants as appropriate Planning and developing board meeting agenda and related reports for bi-monthly meetings ran by the Board President

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position supervises the Program Coordinator and other positions created to report to the Executive Director.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

A bachelor’s degree or greater from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree or major coursework in planning, economics, sustainability, business, marketing, public relations, or other related fields Knowledge of federal and state grant funding and the development of grant proposals. Superior organizational and computer skills Strong aptitude for quickly learning and utilizing new subject matter is essential. Planning, organizing, and managing multiple priorities Developing and implementing strategic plans and programs Understanding the legal and regulatory environment and government programs, including laws, regulatory mandates, and grant programs Understanding intergovernmental relations, political implications, and barriers Working with a minimal amount of supervision Preparing and managing budgets Researching, evaluating, and analyzing Preparing and presenting technical materials to a variety of audiences One or more years of nonprofit experience Experience creating professional presentations Ability to effectively communicate the organization’s mission to stakeholders, funders, partners, and the community Demonstrated ability to collaborate with staff/peers as a team Strong written and oral communication skills Comfort and experience with public speaking Strong work ethic with a high degree of energy Ideal candidates are excellent communicators, self-starters, motivators, leaders, creative, organized, and have a functional understanding of technical issues related to alternative fuels and alternative fuel technologies (e.g., hybrid electric vehicles, AFVs, idle reduction, etc.).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

This position will work either in the organization’s Indianapolis office or remotely in a suitable professional environment. Employee will be expected to fulfill work hours and report weekly on their activities. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. Must reside in Indiana.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

An employee must meet the physical demands described here to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee must frequently stand, walk, use, and reach with hands and arms. They will need to be able to set up tables, chairs, and other items for event booths.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

This position is a regular position requiring 40-45 hours per week and occasional weekend work.

TRAVEL

This position requires up to 40% travel within the State of Indiana including occasional travel outside of the state for conferences and training.
