Primary Purpose:

Provides high quality didactic and/or clinical instruction in the field of specialty to ensure students/residents meet course outcomes and scholarly activities. As Director serves as course director for the orthodontic didactic/clinical courses. May be given additional administrative duties.

Essential Job Functions: 

Teaching
1. Provides high quality instruction in field of expertise, ensuring residents meet course outcomes.
2. Plans, evaluates, and revises curricula, course content, course materials, and methods of instruction.
3. Prepares course materials, such as syllabi, homework assignments, and handouts.
4. Identifies specialized materials for outside reading assignments.
5. Initiates, facilitates, and moderates classroom discussions.
6. Supervises clinical sessions.
7. Assists residents who need extra help with their coursework outside of class.
8. Maintains resident attendance records, grades, and other required records.
9. Evaluates and grades residents' class and clinic work, assignments, and/or papers.
10. Compiles, administers, and grades examinations, or assigns this work to others.
11. Maintains regularly scheduled office hours to advise and assist residents.
12. Advises residents on academic and vocational curricula and on career issues.

Clinical Instruction
1. Assesses clinical education needs and patient and client teaching needs using a variety of methods.
2. Demonstrates patient care in clinical units of hospitals.

Research & Scholarship
1. Conducts research in a particular field of knowledge and publish findings in professional journals, books, or electronic media.
2. Reviews papers for publication in journals.

Service & Professional Development
1. Participates in campus and community events, such as giving presentations to the public.
2. Actively identifies opportunities and provides service relating to fields of expertise for the benefit of internal and external communities.

Director Duties:
1. Serves as course director for Orthodontic didactic and clinical courses.
2. Oversees Predoc Orthodontic program.
3. Manages D3-D4 cases.

Other Assigned Duties
1. Collaborates with staff and colleagues to address teaching and research issues, and to improve students' learning experiences.
2. Serves on academic or administrative committees that deal with institutional policies, departmental matters, and academic issues.
3. Mentors junior and adjunct faculty members.
4. Keeps abreast of developments in the field by reading current literature, talking with colleagues, and participating in professional conferences.
5. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

1. Dental Medicine - Comprehensive knowledge of the information/techniques needed in Dental Medicine. This includes symptoms/treatment planning.
2. Education/Training - Knowledge of principles/methods for curriculum/training design/teaching for individuals/groups, and the measurement of training effects.
3. English Language - Thorough knowledge of the structure/content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar.
4. Customer Service - General knowledge of principles/processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of user satisfaction.

Physical Requirements:

Required Certifications/Licensures:   Certificate in Orthodontics from a CODA-accredited institution.
Board eligible or board certified from the American Board of Orthodontics.

Required Education:  DDS/DMD or foreign equivalent dentistry degree

Major (if required: 

Required Experience: 

Professional doctoral-level teaching experience or minimum of three (3) years of experience working in private practice, as an Orthodontist.

For Assistant Professor rank: College-level teaching experience.

For Associate Professor rank: Continued professional growth and success in full-time university teaching for four (4) years at the rank of Assistant Professor; scholarly contributions to the university, higher education, or one's academic area(s) of specialization that have received peer recognition.

For Professor rank: Continued professional growth and success in full-time university teaching for five (5) years at the rank of Associate Professor; significant scholarly contributions to the university, higher education, or one's academic area(s) of specialization that have that have been recognized as substantial by one's peers.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Didactic and clinical Orthodontic teaching experience.
