Job Summary: The Pharmacy Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the department and the Pharmacy staff, ensuring efficient and effective operation of the pharmacy. The manager guarantees the pharmacy provides optimal patient care while maintaining the necessary regulatory standards. The Pharmacy Manager will be responsible for the operation and management of the Pharmacy at their location(s) and across the system for their assigned functional area of responsibility (Operations, Clinical, Compounding, Education & Training, Technology, or Diversion). They will manage achievement of the department commitment to be innovative, proactive, and accountable for quality patient outcomes by optimizing medication use across the continuum of care. Responsibilities Customer Service/Patient Experience Obtain and prioritize the voice of the customer in the design and implementation of pharmacy services. Manage achievement of the department commitment to be innovative and proactive to achieve quality patient outcomes by optimizing medication use. Provide excellent customer service to patients and other healthcare team members with attention to all staff needs. Manage pharmacy team to utilize ICARE values and AIDET principles and customer service guidelines to provide optimal pharmaceutical services. Develop, promote, and maintain professional relationships, internally and externally. HR/Talent Management Manage the day-to-day operations of the pharmacy team. Recruit, interview, hire, orient, train, supervise, evaluate, and counsel direct associates; address associates’ concerns and complaints. Reward and recognize associates; create and supervise work schedules, vacation schedules, time off, overtime, training qualifications and meetings. Track and record workload summary for analysis to ensure effective planning, staffing, and development of the department. Provide opportunities for staff to act as preceptor or liaison for pharmacy students and residents. Assist with the development of staff education programs and encourage staff development and education. Budget/Finance Management Contribute to the Positive Overall Financial Status of the Department. Control, maintain, monitor, and administer annual budgets (operating and capital) to meet department goals. Provide variance analysis of meaningful financial variations on a monthly basis or more frequently as needed. Seek innovative ways to reduce/contain costs while ensuring quality services. Ensure staffing meets patient needs, reviewing workload metrics and staffing variance to minimize overtime and maximize efficiency. Monitor prescriber compliance with formulary restrictions, therapeutic interchanges; process non-formulary requests appropriately. Medication Safety, Regulatory Affairs, and Quality Assurance Participate in the development, collection, monitoring, and action plans for quality improvement to resolve variance and improve patient care. Monitor, detect, and report medication variances and adverse drug reactions promptly. Ensure departmental policies align with regulatory guidelines and laws (State Board of Pharmacy, DEA, FDA, CMS, The Joint Commission). Align with ASHP standards of performance for hospital pharmacy. Operations/Medication Preparation & Distribution Oversee system-wide operations and business unit activities. Lead pharmacy in planning and utilization of automation and technology. Implement and monitor sterile and non-sterile compounding practices in compliance with USP 795, 797, and 800. Implement and monitor medication distribution processes. Maintain accountability and control of schedule II-V controlled substances. Develop processes to ensure appropriate dispensing and distribution of controlled substances using Pyxis C-II Safe, Medstation, internal inventories, anesthesia stations, boxes, trays, carts, and waste logs. Monitor and reconcile controlled substance variances, including data from Pyxis, CII Safe, and MedAssist. Clinical/Medication Management Develop and implement pharmacy-related clinical programs, studies, and services. Optimize the model to support the Practice Advancement Initiative (PAI). Oversee Drug Use Policy and formulary management activities. Ensure drug information provided is accurate, adequate, and timely. Leadership/Strategy Manage a system-wide project or program. Develop strategic plans for system functional area and site in conjunction with Directors. Act as pharmacy liaison and participate in committees, serving as staff pharmacist or Director substitute when needed. Inform employees of matters affecting work, interpret policies, and solicit feedback. Prioritize and delegate tasks and projects within the department; schedule coverage as necessary. Design and implement efficient services, offer revenue enhancements, monitor expenses, benchmark, and communicate for service excellence. Education, Credentials, Licenses Graduate from an ACPE-accredited pharmacy college. Current U.S. pharmacist license in the state of employment. Specialized Knowledge Superior problem‑solving and critical‑thinking skills. Superior customer service and communication skills. Familiarity with current practice standards.
