GRADE SLE 0003 LOCATION OF POSITION MDH Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center 8450 Dorsey Run Road Jessup, MD 20794 MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB The main purpose of this full‑time position is to serve as a Maryland Police Training Commission Certified Police Officer, capable of conducting complex criminal and general investigations in a fair and impartial manner while maintaining strict confidentiality. The officer will implement crime scene procedures, retain evidence, and complete comprehensive investigative reports. This position, in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, will also conduct interviews, interrogations, and liaison with the Maryland State Police under an MOU regarding criminal investigations at MDH facilities. SELECTED CANDIDATE Must possess knowledge and understanding of Maryland criminal laws and MDH policies and procedures. Will be required to enforce all appropriate federal, state, and local laws in a fair and impartial manner. Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license from their state of residency to operate state vehicles and provide medical and judicial transports for forensic patients. Must possess investigative abilities as well as good writing and oral communication skills. Must actively maintain Maryland Police and Corrections Commission Police Officer Certification and Special Police Commission. PLEASE NOTE The position may be reassigned to work different shifts, or recalled during weekends, holidays, or off hours to meet the investigative and operational needs of the MDH Police Department. All MDH Police Officers with POII and below will be assigned an on‑call status on a rotating basis when off duty. Detachments that have four or fewer personnel (including lieutenants and sergeants) will include sergeants in the on‑call rotation. All STIU Personnel are designated as “Emergency Essential Employees.” Duties are considered “Essential” and may require reporting to work or remaining at work during emergency situations in accordance with established MDH, STIU, and Maryland policies and procedures. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education: Graduation from an accredited high school or high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation. Experience: Six months of experience as a certified law enforcement officer. Notes: The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Public Safety Article, Section 3‑207, Annotated Code of Maryland. Candidates may substitute U.S. Armed Forces military service experience at a rank of Corporal/Petty Officer or higher as a non‑commissioned officer in Protective Service classifications or Law Enforcement specialty codes in the Military Police Officer field of work on a year‑for‑year basis for the required experience. LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS Candidates must possess a Police Officer certification as required by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission at the time of application. Applicants who were formerly certified within the past three years and are eligible for recertification at appointment meet the certification requirement. Recertification criteria are listed in the Code of Maryland Regulations 12.04.01.07. Employees may be required to possess or obtain a special police commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3‑209, Annotated Code of Maryland. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS Selection standards for Police Officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with Public Safety Article, Section 3‑207, Annotated Code of Maryland. These criteria include the following: U.S. Citizenship At least 21 years of age Satisfactory background investigation, including a check of criminal history Oral interview Physical examination Possession of a driver's license valid in the State of Maryland Phone number for contact when required Potential firearms proficiency and safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis as required by the commission Substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations 17.04.09 SELECTION PROCESS Applicants who meet the minimum (and selective) qualifications will be included in further evaluation.
