Labor Relations Consultant

Spectrum Health

Job Summary:Under the general direction of the Director, Labor Relations, the Labor Relations Consultant is responsible for promoting healthy labor‑management relations. The role includes developing and administering the organization’s labor relation policies, administering disciplinary actions, handling grievances and disputes, partnering with Human Resources and other departments to implement employee and labor relations strategies, delivering training to all levels of leadership, and supporting collective bargaining negotiations with minimal guidance from the LR Director. Responsibilities Designs and delivers training on labor relations and positive employee relations for leaders and staff. Develops and implements leadership and staff education, campaign activities, and resource management as part of union campaign strategy. Provides guidance and training for managers on labor relations issues and serves as a resource to HR staff on contract interpretation. Maintains formal and informal communication channels, encourages new ideas, and advises on administrative policies and procedures. Collects data, conducts investigations, interviews managers, and prepares recommended/grievance responses, including federal mediation when appropriate. Conducts internal investigations of employee misconduct, summarizes findings, and develops solutions. Maintains a grievance tracking system and reacts to day‑to‑day issues in accordance with established policies and the collective bargaining agreement. Manages relationships with union and non‑union personnel, keeping abreast of developing issues and advising HR leaders. Monitors labor/employee relations practices and trends to minimize further unionization, and performs ongoing policy analysis for compliance with labor agreements. Recommends policy changes, assists in formal and informal labor/management meetings, and serves on negotiating teams and employee committees as needed. Participates in developing department goals, objectives, and systems, and suggests new approaches to improve departmental efficiency. Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Bachelors Degree in Labor Relations, industrial relations, human resources, or a related field (or equivalent experience). At least 7 years of progressively responsible employee/labor relations experience in a unionized environment, including grievance handling, collective bargaining, and organizing campaigns. JD or Master‟s degree preferred.
