Clinical Nurse Manager
The Clinical Nurse Manager is responsible for the daily oversight of clinical operations, ensuring the delivery of safe, efficient, and high-quality patient care throughout the perioperative continuum. This position provides leadership and supervision to clinical staff, coordinates operating room workflow, manages staffing and patient flow, and ensures compliance with federal, state, and accreditation standards. This position reports to the Center Administrator.
The Clinical Nurse Manager serves as a clinical leader and resource for staff, physicians, and anesthesia providers while fostering a culture of teamwork, accountability, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement. This role requires significant Operating Room experience and the ability to multitask, prioritize competing demands, and effectively manage a fast-paced ambulatory surgery center.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provides day-to-day leadership and supervision of nursing and clinical support staff.
- Oversees daily surgical schedules, patient flow, staffing assignments, and Operating Room workflow to maximize efficiency and patient safety.
- Functions as a clinical resource for staff and provides guidance regarding patient care and clinical decision-making.
- Participates in direct patient care, including circulating in the Operating Room, as needed.
- Collaborates with physicians, anesthesia providers, and interdisciplinary team members to ensure efficient and high-quality patient care.
- Promotes excellent customer service for patients, families, physicians, and staff.
- Coordinates daily clinical operations to ensure efficient patient throughput.
- Ensures compliance with nursing standards, CMS Conditions for Coverage, OSHA, CDC guidelines, state regulations, and accreditation requirements.
- Monitors clinical documentation for accuracy, completeness, and regulatory compliance.
- Responds to and coordinates clinical emergencies while maintaining competency in emergency preparedness.
- Promotes infection prevention practices to reduce healthcare-associated and surgical site infections.
- Oversees equipment readiness, instrument processing, and clinical supply availability.
- Assists with recruitment, onboarding, orientation, training, and competency validation of clinical personnel.
- Develops daily staffing assignments and assists with scheduling to meet patient care needs.
- Promotes cross-training and professional development across all clinical areas.
- Coaches, mentors, and evaluates staff performance while fostering employee engagement and accountability.
- Addresses performance concerns and collaborates with leadership on employee development and corrective action when appropriate.
- Promotes a culture of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
- Participates in Quality Assessment and Performance Improvement (QAPI) activities.
- Assists with regulatory surveys, accreditation readiness, and implementation of corrective action plans.
- Investigates incidents, near misses, and patient safety events and implements corrective actions.
- Ensures compliance with infection prevention, medication safety, sterilization, high-level disinfection, and environmental safety standards.
- Promotes cost-effective utilization of staffing, equipment, and clinical supplies.
- Assists with inventory management and evaluates equipment and supply needs.
- Recommends operational improvements to enhance efficiency and patient care.
- Supports budget objectives through responsible resource management.
- Maintains current RN licensure and required certifications.
- Serves on committees and participates in staff meetings, education programs, and organizational initiatives.
- Maintains professional knowledge through continuing education.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing.
- Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
- Current unrestricted Registered Nurse license.
- Current BLS and ACLS certification required.
- PALS certification preferred, depending on patient population.
- Minimum of 3–5 years of Operating Room nursing experience required , including circulating experience.
- Previous ambulatory surgery center experience strongly preferred.
- Minimum of 2 years of clinical leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
- Experience coordinating OR workflow, staffing, and daily surgical operations.
- Knowledge of CMS, AAAHC, Joint Commission, OSHA, CDC, and infection prevention standards.
- Strong leadership, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Demonstrated ability to multitask and effectively manage competing priorities in a fast-paced surgical environment.
- Ability to coordinate Operating Room workflow and optimize patient throughput.
- Excellent communication and conflict-resolution skills.
- Strong clinical judgment and critical thinking abilities.
- Proficiency with electronic medical records and clinical documentation systems.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, and lift throughout the workday.
- Ability to assist with patient positioning and transfers.
- Ability to respond quickly during emergency situations.
- Visual and auditory acuity sufficient to safely perform nursing duties.
