Events Manager
Unruled Masses
Who We Are Unruled Masses is a New York-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that is building new and dynamic public civic intelligence and direct action infrastructure for peaceful civic engagement. These tools enable ordinary people to expose abuse patterns, map corruption networks and coordinate civic engagement and community building worldwide. We are nonpartisan, guided by evidence, grounded in human rights, and partner-focused to support pro-democratic coalitions. UM seeks to unite people and partners with intelligence, materials and communications to rebuild connected and hopeful communities where institutions are accountable to the people.
Who You Are You are a proactive, detail-oriented professional who believes that real change happens when people gather in person. You are passionate about accountability and want to use your organizational talents to create spaces where civic action and community building can thrive.
You may have a background in field marketing, event production, hospitality, or grassroots organizing. Whether you have experience managing high-stakes, televised events or you are a master of local "tabletop" cafe gatherings, you understand that the logistics are the backbone of any successful movement. You are a collaborator who enjoys working within a team to turn a strategic vision into a lived experience.
What You’ll Do As an Events Manager, you will play a critical role in launching and scaling our Community Action Training Program —bringing free, credentialed briefings and civic training directly to rooms of 20 to 100 neighbors.
Specifically, you will:
- Identify Opportunities: Scout and evaluate suitable local venues (libraries, community centers, rented spaces) and virtual platforms to host our 60-to-75-minute Community Action Training sessions.
- Collaborate on Strategy: Work alongside other Event Manager volunteers to determine which neighborhoods and cities align best with our mission to scale these trainings.
- Design & Plan: Lead the logistical design process, ensuring venues are equipped with necessary AV components (like projectors and sound) to cleanly deliver our Corruption Intelligence Briefs and Nonviolent Action Playbook teach-ins.
- Coordinate Logistics: Manage the "nitty-gritty" details, including venue sourcing, coordinate with our credentialed speakers (former intelligence officers, data scientists, professors), handle volunteer scheduling, and manage equipment transport.
- Execute & Oversee: Help lead the on-site or virtual execution of these training events, ensuring everything runs smoothly from doors-open to the concluding Q&A.
- Integrate Action: Partner with our intelligence and communications teams to ensure attendees transition seamlessly from learning about corruption to engaging with Unruled Masses' broader civic tools.
Exceptional volunteers may:
- Serve in regional or national leadership roles to scale the training program
- Oversee high-budget or complex televised productions and large-scale panels
- Develop standardized, replicable "Event Kits" so global chapters can host local trainings
- Mentor junior event coordinators
Event Scales of Interest We are looking for individuals capable of managing a diverse range of activations, with a heavy emphasis on our core training program:
- Community Action Trainings (Core Focus): Replicable, 60-to-75-minute local workshops and virtual seminars for 20 to 100 attendees, pairing hard-hitting research with actionable civic training.
- Micro-Events: Cafe meetups, small informational tables, and local volunteer onboarding.
- Civic Presence: Coordinated UM blocks at marches, protests, and community rallies.
- Major Productions: Large-scale town halls, multi-day summits, and televised panels featuring our credentialed expert network.
Ideal Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience in event planning, marketing, workshop coordination, or project management.
- Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple moving parts simultaneously.
- A "roll up your sleeves" attitude—comfortable with both high-level strategy and physical setup/teardown (projectors, seating, signage).
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to coordinate professionally with credentialed experts, venue hosts, and everyday community members.
- Ability to work effectively in a remote team environment while executing in the physical world.
- Experience in "guerrilla marketing," grassroots mobilizing, or community education is a significant plus.
- Comfortable with the unpredictability of live events and able to problem-solve under pressure.
Compensation & Commitment This is an unpaid volunteer role. We are flexible on time commitments but ask for at least 2–5 hours a week for planning, with higher availability required during the lead-up to and execution of specific events. As funding allows, paid positions may be offered in the future.
Benefits of Volunteering with Unruled Masses

- Build a professional portfolio of diverse event executions, from local grassroots workshops to large-scale productions.

- Directly facilitate the "real world" room where neighbors turn abstract awareness into organized, lawful action.
- Receive credit and visibility for your role in major public-facing UM activations.
- Be part of a mission focused not just on exposing harm—but rebuilding agency, joy, and community.
